...... How long will it be before we have new 'claims companies' advertising on TV - "been delayed 3 hours 1 minute? Claim Now!"

Long time reader, first time poster. Please help...

On Monday my BA 340pm flight from London Heathrow to Edinburgh was cancelled due to fog.
We stood in line for ten hours waiting to rebook. I tried to reobook on their phoneline but after half an hour was still on hold - an expensive business on a mobile. Little information was forthcoming from BA staff in the airport. Around 11pm they told us that we wouldn't get rebooked that night.

This meant that I would not be able to go on the football away trip which was leaving at 715am Tuesday from Glasgow. This being a pre-paid trip with Thomas Cook. The latter said that i would be posted as a no-show but they could offer no refund. So I am £350 out of pocket for that alone.

BA offered us a city centre hotel but many of us decided to sleep on the floor in the queue as otherwise we would have returned to the end of a line featuring a couple of hundred people in the morning.

At 530am after the desks had reopened, the first flight they could confirm me on was 3pm. I suggested Glasgow and bussing/training it to Edinburgh from there.
The desk attendant did try unsuccessfully for a 645am flight to Edinburgh.

I was booked onto the 955am to Glasgow which eventually left at 1050am. I bought breakfast while i waited and kept the receipts hoping to claim them back. After landing in Glasgow i discovered that my bag hadn't made the flight. I took the bus and train back to Edinburgh.I arrived in Edinburgh 22 hours later than originally scheduled.
I have kept my receipts for the public transport as well.

The bag eventually was delivered to me 24 hours later still (Wednesday afternoon).

First contact with my travel insurers (AA) told me that i could not claim back the £350.

So my question to fellow forumites is who should i chase up, how and for how much compensation/refund?
BA/Thomas Cook/AA/ or my credit card company as i paid for the football trip package on my card?
    Or all four?

I have a credit card through my bank and always pay off in full.

Many thanks indeed for any advice or thoughts based on any similar experience you may have had.

Hell man, that's awful. Was that for Barca vs Celtic aye? I'd be absolutely raging man!

Mrscb - do you think they should've had more resources to avoid the knock on effects of fog causing delays of 3 hours or more?
Yes .(I think)..it's all very complicated!I have emailed Jet2 to find out the exact reason for delay as we weren't told anything officially.there must have been another reason why the larger plane wasn't used. Also on the flight stats site it doesn't show the flight we ended up on.. Just the 1st of the two which had a 4 hour delay.. Ours was another hour after that.. Original was LS186 . Ours was LS186a.
The cracked windscreen in the way out we were told was caused by deicing and then taking off before it was the correct temperature .
So it was all off the plane(after a long wait for wheelchair assistance.. So long that by the time we were off the windscreen was out!) through passport control, through the airport and security again then back on a new plane.. We were just relieved there was another plane available .
 Am thinking of a new one:beer:
  • Hi,

Hope someone can advise on this situation.

We flew at the end of August with Thomas Cook to Turkey.
Flight coming back was delayed by 7hrs. I have a complaint letter in with them now since beginning of Sept, still awaiting a reply, we are due at kleast £60 refunded from our choose your seat but they are dragging their heels!

I am unsure about the circumstances though. The plane supposed to be ours was grounded in America due to the hurricaine/bad wetaher they had around that time, but does this count as the bad weather acceptable excuse, as the bad weather was not actually in Turkey and the plane was not actually on our flight at the time, basically we just didnt have a plane and it took them 7 hours to get us one!

    Thankyou
    Kirsty

    Hello,
We were on a Thomson flight from Tel Aviv to Luton in April 2008. It was delayed, eventually after midnight they told us it would be next day and we were put up in a hotel. The next day we spent another good few hours in the airport until they announced still no luck, and we finally went on the Tuesday afternoon, two days after the original itinerary.
Flightstats shows actually departure three hours before the original time, without explaining that it was two days later. I have found a newspaper article about that, and linked that in my complaint to Thomson. Will that suffice?
Also, we were given a voucher for some money (not sure how much) off another flight, which we did use. Does that affect it?
We flew with three kids, one an infant. Is the claim for four times the compensation?
    Thank you for your help,
    Anna
  • Hello

In 2005 we were due to fly from Glasgow to Reus. The flight was delayed for 19 hours. (Delightful trying to amuse children in an airport lounge for hours on end.) For most of the time, our plane was apparently sitting with a problem on a runway in Majorca. By the time the flight left Glasgow in the wee small hours, Reus airport was closed, so we were diverted to Barcelona. Flightstats shows the flight to Reus leaving on time, but no flights from Glasgow to Barcelona on that day, at that time of the morning. mmmmm

BA should reimburse you for the cost of telephoning them, and any money you had to spend on food and drink and essential phone calls while you were stuck (unless they provided adequate refreshments). No compensation is due, however, because the fog was clearly not their fault.

Sadly, no-one is responsible for you missing your football trip (although read your insurance policy very carefully just in case). At the time you were stranded, you might have been able to get BA to re-route you to where the football was, but that chance has obviously gone now.
  • BA haven't updated their website yet. You could always download the template letter from the CAA website and send it by post to the BA Sudbury address.

Do you have a link to the template letter? I can't seem to find it on the CAA website.
  • Link on post #70 upthread.
    Thanks for that.
  • Does this apply to being stranded in Madrid 2 years ago because of the Volcanic Ash? Using, inter alia, your advice we managed to recover our hotel costs, but no food costs, and certainly no delay compensation from Air Europa.
