Just to warn you-I've just rang the HMRC to register as self employed and the guy told me that there will be a £100 penalty charge as i did not register in the first 3 months-thats what you get for being honest.
And how much money have I made through mystery shopping since i started (in May)?

    About £40!!

He said that I can appeal against it...

    Very annoyed.

I applied to TNS last week too and haven't heard anything yet. My bet is I didn't make it through the test.....!

It took a while for them to get back to me......don't worry I don't think the length of time is indicative of anything!!!!

I registered with Grassroots about a month a go, maybe a little less - and got my first phonecall last week with an assignment which I did yesterday. Unfortunately it was a 60 mile round trip (I live in a rural part of Wales) and I registered at the end of a 'wave' which meant most of that assignment locations had already been snapped up.

I was paid £8 to cover the fuel though plus £10 for the assignment itself. Quite enjoyed it actually, but hope my next one is closer to home!

I have just been accepted with Retail Eyes. However can anyone recommend a book I can buy on helping me write up reports.

Also as I am in full time employment can I declare my earnings to the tax office from my mystery shopping assignments at the end of the tax year. I have read about registering as self employed but that would not apply to me.

Hi, and welcome to MSE - you're going to love this site :)

Don't worry about giving your bank details to Grassroots - they're an established company and just need the details to pay you.

I've done the stupid thing myself with a company who didn't ask for bank details at the beginning (GAP), and then forgot to submit it, thus missing my first payment date. It makes life easier if you give them the details straight away and don't have to worry about it later. :)

MABLE- I work as a teacher but do mystery shopping.

Today I registered with the tax office and have been given a £100 penalty for not registering within 3 months.

Just want to warn you-even though I will prob make less that £100 per year from MS, I have to declare it to the tax office-but I should get an exemption from paying NI (i think).

Does anyone know of any UK only mailing lists for mystery shopping? I am sorry if this question has been asked before but there are a lot of posts and I could not read them all.
