Our local Cineworld is £8.10 for adults, and, I think, £5.70 for children. Movies for Juniors offers a choice of three older films each week for £1, Saturday only.

Reel Cinema, which is in the next town but just as close to me as I live on the border of my town, is a lot cheaper. I'm not sure what the regular charge is, but Monday and Wednesday it is only £3.30. Kids Club is slightly dearer at £1.10, but runs daily through school holidays as well as Saturday and Sunday.

Reel have just allowed a local group to have a screen just for us once a month, which is great as we all have disabled children. Some of the kids wander around or shout out, and cannot attend ordinary public screenings because it disturbs others. We can also have low lights instead of darkness, so it is better for some of the kids. We will be watching Kids Club films, at £1.10 per person, so older films, but that's fine with us.

We did have a similar arrangement with Cineworld, but they have just stopped this in order to promote their autism friendly screenings - a full price film once a month. Very expensive for families, and no consideration of other disabilities, although I doubt if they would throw us out.

Your Reel didn't get turned into an Odeon?

It only opened last year, on a new leisure complex. I know this sounds daft, but there is plenty of free parking as well, including disabled spaces. Cineworld has free parking too, but only seven disabled spaces (shared with Pizza Hut), and most parking further away. Parking further away is fine if I don't have my son with me, but quite lonely if walking back to the car on my own. Disabled spaces are often filled, but I must admit that I haven't seen anybody park there without a blue badge, which is good.
  • i cant remember the last time i paid for cinema as i wait for free screenings or until my brother get some vouchers from work that have a 3 days until they expire.

i know it between £9.90 and £14 for a adult ticket where i am

since i have a free ticket i usually buy their biggest drink to share with my bf which is around £4 or the popcorn and drink deal at £7.50
  • Slightly off-topic but I go to a gym which has its own cinema room. It's....amazing! You can work out while watching a flick. The feel of the cinema's definitely there.

As for prices. I paid £5.80 for a daytime showing today at the AMC. Had to put up with an idiot (sorry annoying person) rustling his wrappers though.

Usual price is about £8 or £10 for a 3D flick.

    Bottle of Oasis was £2.95!!!
  • Started in cinemas at the age of 19 and at one point was the head cashier when it was £2.30 per adult and £1.10 a child. Can you imagine the business they'd do if it were the same price nowdays. The big companies are doing themselves no favours charging so much, I'm surprised they've lasted this long. 25 years later (OMG) in my town the prices are £9.20 child and £9.70 adult, thats for The Hobbit , tomorrow at 6.00pm. So from £3.40 to £18.90 - that's a hefty difference.

They just cant go without a drink/food for a couple of hours. I wonder what them same people would do if they were out in the wilderness with no food and drink.

It adds to the 'experience' of going the cinema IMO. I always get Popcorn and a drink when i visit the cinema. Its not that i CANT go without food for the length of the movie, its simply that i enjoy the experience.

We're really lucky where I am a new cinema opened in what use to be an old Odeon Cinema.

They are showing new releases for £4 any time any day.

Went to see Possession a few weeks back paid £8ish in total for my ticket, HUGE popcorn and a drink

Is that the one at The Mall in Romford by any chance? It's great value, especially considering the £10+ the Vue charges per ticket.

I used to work in a cinema- they make no profit on ticket prices, it just covers the cost of renting the film from the distributor. The food is expensive because that is their sole source of revenue.

That can't be right surely? How does it explain the huge variations in various cinema prices?

This cant be true seeing as my local Odeon has 3 different seating option available at 3 different prices for the same movie at the same time. So surley some profit is being made there alone? Im sure other cinemas have upgraded seating too at a higher price?

  • I paid £6.20 for two tickets (Orange Wednesday) for my daughter and I to see Twiglight a couple of weeks ago. We took popcorn, sweets and a drink bought from a cheap shop which took us to just under £10 for both of us :) (It was a daytime showing)

I think a lot depends on how often you visit as well. I rarely go to the cinema, less than once a year in fact. Orange Wednesdays are out as OH works a long way from home and doesn't get in until 8pm.

We actually went to see The Hobbit on Saturday, simply because I'm a huge Tolkien fan and love the series so for me it was a night out. We took our teenage daughter as well so it became a bit of a family trip and it cost us £30 for 3 VIP seats at a 7pm screening. I took our own drinks and snacks as well.

I was happy with that tbh, its a rare occasion that we are all together for a night out and I felt it was worth a little extra on the seat prices for the big, comfy VIP seats as well.

If I went to the Cinema monthly I'd probably feel a bit more irked at the prices but as a treat we enjoyed it.
