how much do you think a cinema ticket cost these days.......?

  • I used to work in a cinema- they make no profit on ticket prices, it just covers the cost of renting the film from the distributor. The food is expensive because that is their sole source of revenue.

It's just under a tenner for the Odeon and Curzon cinemas in Wimbledon. As the latter shows arty films, you don't usually get fidgety giggling teenagers texting each other.

Much as rude cinema-goers annoy me, I do hugely prefer seeing a film on the big screen with a proper sound system. If you go to a geeky SF screening, the nerds in the audience clap and cheer appreciatively and the atmosphere is great.

Edit: been a regular cinema-goer for years and have never had my bag searched.

However at the start of the year I started using netflix (along with a service called unotelly). For less than £10 a month, I can watch US or UK version of netflix. Both have different titles available and new/old ones are regularly added/removed. The US one in particular has much more choice than the UK one. They seem to have quite a diversity, when I have friends round, we always manage to find something to watch quite quickly, even though we may have different tastes.

    Thanks for that,

Until very recently I worked for Cineworld, so used to get to see any film I wanted for absolutely nothing (and take a friend with me) AND I got 40% off concessions. It was immense. I'm really gutted that I don;t have that privilege anymore!! I have signed up for an unlimited card just today, which is £14.99 a month for unlimited films and 10% off concessions, which after your first year will increase to 20%. Also, recommend a friend and you both get a month free. It's a good deal imo. Go and see 2 films in a month and you've saved some money. At my local (the one I worked at), an adult price at peak times is £8.10. Booking online will save you 10% with MyCineworld. Movies for juniors is on Saturday mornings, with £1 entry for each person, including adults. You must have a child with you though, and this is only valid for selected films, usually about 3, all showing at 10am. My local has also recently brought in cheap Tuesdays, where a ticket is about £4. Many cinemas do this and it brings in many customers on a day when it would otherwise be quiet. And don't forget 2 for 1 on Orange Wednesdays!

Soo many people complained about the prices to me, some people in a very snotty/arrogant way as if it is actually my fault for working there, others thinking the staff get paid loads. But hasn't the cinema always been an expensive day out?? I remember when I was younger going with my family, and even though it was maybe £5 a ticket we still used to moan!

They also make profit from upselling including the VIP seats and 3D screenings now. When the VIP/3D first came out they needed it to cover the cost of installing them, but once that's done, it's purely profit. I started at the cinema just as they installed VIP seats, and we had a target to reach in selling the VIP seats so the installation costs were paid off as soon as. I was always good at selling them lol. It was £1 extra, then it went up to £1.50 and I couldn't sell them as well after that... so that £1.50 was pure profit

Also 3D the glasses only cost cinemas about 50p, so the rest goes towards either the installation of the screen or profit if it's already made that money. I think they cost about 5k each if my memory serves me right!
  • Our local independent cinema is £3.50 at the weekends or £2.50 the rest of the week! Knock spots off the nearer Cineworld as well. The seats are comfy and you can stretch out! Best value cinema ever!

    OH WOW.

just randomly came across this, its my old local growing up. Last film I saw there was Blair witch project....never could go back.
  • My local Empire cinema is £2.95 for any film, all day, every Tuesday.

Seems like great value to me.

Last year we had a reel cinema (small chain) which did cheap Mondays and Wednesdays. £3,80 for a ticket. £6 for off-peak, £7,60 for 'peak'. Odeon purchased the chain last Christmas time.

Now its £9 for a peak ticket, £8 for off-peak.

Films watched last year, around 20. Films watched this year, 1.

If the levels of advertising is anything to go by, they need customers.
  • Our local Cineworld is £8.10 for adults, and, I think, £5.70 for children. Movies for Juniors offers a choice of three older films each week for £1, Saturday only.

Reel Cinema, which is in the next town but just as close to me as I live on the border of my town, is a lot cheaper. I'm not sure what the regular charge is, but Monday and Wednesday it is only £3.30. Kids Club is slightly dearer at £1.10, but runs daily through school holidays as well as Saturday and Sunday.

Reel have just allowed a local group to have a screen just for us once a month, which is great as we all have disabled children. Some of the kids wander around or shout out, and cannot attend ordinary public screenings because it disturbs others. We can also have low lights instead of darkness, so it is better for some of the kids. We will be watching Kids Club films, at £1.10 per person, so older films, but that's fine with us.

We did have a similar arrangement with Cineworld, but they have just stopped this in order to promote their autism friendly screenings - a full price film once a month. Very expensive for families, and no consideration of other disabilities, although I doubt if they would throw us out.
  • Why is everyone so horrified at the idea of businesses making a profit?
