You needn't have paid the extra. There is a link to click on which you've obviously missed. You CAN travel with cabin baggage and without priority check-in.

'You have selected our Online Check-In/Priority Boarding service, passengers who qualify for this service can avoid check-in queues and be priority boarded onto the aircraft. Don’t forget to check-in online from 2 days up to 4 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time. Click to Remove this service and just travel with 0 bags'.

That may be the case - I'll have to check but my point is that the option should not be hidden but clear for all to see. On the pull down menu for bags there SHOULD be an option to travel with 0 bags AND an option for Online Check in/Priority Boarding (0 Bags). But then that would be far too simple for the customer - much better to hide it somewhere else on the page and confuse them instead!!

Just checked the Ryanair booking page. Just where is the option to Click to Remove this service and just travel with 0 bags?

There is an option for insurance:

If you would prefer NOT to purchase travel insurance simply chose No Travel Insurance Required in the drop down menu

    but

no option to Click to Remove this service and just travel with 0 bags?

    Yes there is.
When you select "0 bags-online checkin/priority boarding" the following statement pops up below it.

Try it and see. pick some random flights, select them, go to the next page, and select 0 bags and see the text appear below your selection. You arent committing yourself at this stage, but its handy to work out these things in advance.

As I said earlier and BudgetFlyer has reitereated, it's there, directly below the boxes where you enter your name. It maybe better to have it as a drop down selection, but they,ve done it their way, though it's certainley not hidden.

OK - you win - I can now see it. Funny though, when we booked yesterday I'm positive the pop up message did not appear. I was so annoyed by the "hidden" £4 charge that I called the wife to check if she could see how to avoid the charge and she couldn't. We quit the booking and started again (several times) but never saw the pop up message. Perhaps Firefox was having a bad day, but then we did try with IE7 as well.

However, I still think the layout of the booking page is flawed and certainly designed to extract as much cash as possible from the customer. In order to choose the option you want should it really be necessary to choose an unwanted option and only then be offered the required option?

Surely it would make more sense to offer all options from the drop down menu rather than this circuitous (though probably) more profitable nonsense.

Its clever marketing, you have to admit.

Ryanair's booking page reminds me of one of those TV pickpockets that manage to take eveything off you they can by confusing you & taking advantage of the fact that for most people they're in an unfamiliar situation.
They got me for travel insurance but luckily that's one of the few things i can cancel without penalty.
I do like them for bringing us cheap flights [especially for provincial airports] but you really do need to read everything twice.

    I've got a new money-spinner for Mr. O'Leary
He could sell insurance right at the start of the booking process to cover us from not spotting all off the automatic 'opt-ins' & making a mistake on the booking form.
Is that what the regular airlines do anyway ;)

From ryanairs point, it makes sense although it is frustrating for a customer unless you learn your way round their site- probably 70% of bookings have either paid for baggage or priority boarding/online check in whether they want it or not!
When you are selling a 49p flight, its quite a mark up and extra profit, while still technically offering a bargain flight

Just returned from Ryan Air trip to Alghero. Checked in one piece of baggage but thet didn't ask for any money. We had not paid for it on line and expected to pay at check in.

Flight was excellent 20 mins early both ways all for about £80.00 return for 2 to Sardinia. cant beat it.
