Thanks, puno, for the technical advice. This will be helpful when Mr Dell comes calling!
I have just had the identical email to you.
Goingsenile - I had noted the extreme cost of memory upgrades to the 2200, and that is why I thought Dell might prefer to go the 510m route, where an upgrade to 1Gb RAM is not quite so expensive. I don't see how we can be satisfied with 512MB - especially with graphics sharing the memory this is not good enough and certainly the double memory offer was a major factor in my taking up this offer. Still, very interesting that they were talking to you about a 2200.0 -
id be more than happy if they upgraded me to the 2200, it is a more expensive laptop after all (£110 difference on the basic price). Though they'll probably just want to cancel the order. We were saving nearly £300 on the £1150 orginal list price anyways, so this would be a £400 saving to start with, even without extra ram and the printer thrown in. For that kind of price, i wouldnt worry about the memory, thats easily upgradeable fairly cheaply. Though to be honest, im getting tired of the waiting and feel reluctant to phone up their cheeky 0870 number to try and blag an even better deal. Ive used dell before and had a similar issue on a desktop machine, basically I wanted an upgrade for the same price as they ran outta the orginals and it took an hr and about 5 different people to finally be put though to someone who simply told me 'I know about your problem but I dont have the autority to give you a pc of that spec for that price, its just not possible'. We where always getting a great deal anyways, expecting/demanding anything better is pushing it a bit. So if I dont get a call I think ill wait until the next dell misprice or offer, they seem to happen every couple of weeks anyways.0

Don't you believe it!
I just got my call - they are working on a spec based on the 2200 with an M 725 CPU and have promised to call back "in a few minutes" - that was about 15 mins ago. I think they are baulking at the implications of the memory upgrade. Will report further as and when...0 -
SNAP! Yep, got the email too and have just replied stating that I have spoken to the people listed in it however as they could be of no help when I called I would be delighted if they called me back. Maybe tomorrow...
WooHoo dauphin! I hope you're not pulling our legs! My breath is baited as I wait.0 -
Things are looking up now after all, I wouldn't be so bothered about the double memory if they can sort us out with a decent spec laptop but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I received an e-mail this morning telling me that my order had been cancelled and then I got one this afternoon which was the same as puno's last e-mail telling me that it had been 'unavoidably delayed', does one hand know what the other hand is doing??? I'm not going to phone 'em yet, I'll wait until tomorrow maybe, thanks to puno, dauphin, goingsenile and everybody else for the help and the info on here, if I hadn't read all this I'd probably have given up by now and thought I was getting nothing.
Out of interest I read a comment on thedvdforums where a guy said he had phoned dell to cancel his order because it had taken so long and they allegedly offered him a £50 rebate to keep his order.0 -
They are offering me 768MB RAM - what do you all think? Answers asap please!0

Inspiron 2200
Pentium M725 1.6GHz 2MB L2 cache 400 MHz FSB
768MB 333MHz DDR memory
24x CDRW/24xDVD combo
Everything else, including the printer, pretty much as before I think. Oh, it seems to come with wireless LAN.
This came by email so I am waiting for a call back to ask about the memory.0
