Here are my hens - 2 Rhode Island red/Light Sussex cross (Rapunzel and Aurora), and 2 Buff Orpingtons (Billie and Eco Chick, raised by us from eggs).

We're collecting another 6 Light Sussex eggs next week - should hatch at the beginning of May.

Just discovered this section and it has triggered me off again.
I had 2 lovely chooks the earlier part of this year but after the bad windy weather a neighbours fence panel was blown down and his 4 terriers got into my garden and killed them.
I cried for days and couldn't even face looking out into the garden.
I have had someone secure my garden but deep down I am worried that the dogs will get a sniff of any new chickens and come back. They tunnelled in the last time so we have dug some wire into the ground but still worried. I was going to electrify the fence but my cat goes up there too and she's 16 so I don't want to finish her off.
Your chooks look lovely and I agree about their eggs - they are unbeatable.

Hi, hens are really easy! My children (aged 12 and 14) have been doing most of the caring (apart from the deep cleaning of the henhouse) for about 5 years.

Our pen is about 3m by 6m. We keep 4 in there at present, but have had 10.

I'd love a chicken or two but my garden is only 30'x15', I have an avery but Zebra Finch and Button Quail eggs are a bit on the small side to do anything with :rotfl:
I wouldn't want a chicken or two to be unhappy because of a lack of space, maybe one day when we move I can consider it.

I would love a few hens but we have a clause in our house deeds which states we are not allowed to keep any animals (it names hens, goats, pigeons and a few others) except household pets.

hmmn I think we have too. I would love to have them and should realy check the deed but they are with the solicitor and I dont want to have to pay to get access to them.

also ita an ex-council house and they have quite strict rules about what you can and cant do here.

my garden is quite small but I could put an area to one side for them, which would give them somewhere to scratch etc.

and I do have a daft dog who would probably be terrified of them lol

No cockerel needed to get eggs.
I had two females and there wasn't a cockerel in sight. Got 2 lovely eggs every day
Cockerel needed if you want the eggs fertilising to get chicks.
I have a purpose built chicken shed but friends have converted old sheds to accomodate their ladies.
I fed mine on layers pellets and kitchen scraps. They loved grapes and sweetcorn too.
Supply of fresh water is essential as is a secure run.
Fresh eggs every day - one of lifes little luxuries.
