So sorry for you BillyWhizz.
Earlier in the year a neighbours terriers got into my garden and killed my 2 lovely chooks.
I cried for 4 days and thought I would never have any more but I really missed having them in the garden and their lovely eggs.
I fetched 2 lovely brown chooks from a local supplier last Saturday who has lots of Black Rocks and hybrids.
They are settling in now and my brothers 5 year old twin grand daughters have called them Angelina and Alice.
I do hope you get some more as there is nothing like them is there?
I'm in Derbyshire too - sunny Chesterfield.

Billy Whizz, after losing my 4 hens last week I know just what you're going through.
Hugs to you and your family, Penny. x:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Billy I'm so sorry. That's really awful. I'm getting my first hens on Friday and I'm so excited about it I know I'd be devestated if anything happened to them.
Sending you big hugs.

Hi,
I was wondering if you had to speak to your neighbours and OK, having chickens with them?
Are they very noisy? Also, can you let them run around your garden? Does anyone have a dog and chickens? Do they get on?
I would actually love a cow, but my DH won't let me have one. He's not against chickens, though. I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing...also are they quite nervous? We will be having some building work done in about 3 months, would it be best to wait till after that?

Hi
Just wanted to say a big thanks to all for their support. I rang the local paper today and they are sort of interested in doing a story, think I'll let hubby do that though!!
As to whether we will have anymore, the answer is not sure, the biggest problem is our sole survivor, she will just get picked on so much. Did wonder about seeing if local RSPCA has any elderly friends for her. I know they have been trying to find a home for a Sussex cockeral for quite a while.
Hi to Kittyboo, yes we too are chesterfield area. Who is the local supplier you mention? We originally planned to stick with rare breeds. We had Scots Greys, Marsh Daisy, Cream Legbars and Buff Orpingtons.
Anyway thanks again for your support.0 -
Hi,
I would actually love a cow, but my DH won't let me have one.
This really made me smile FrankieM.Do you have a big garden? When OH and I move (about 6 years yet) we are hoping to have one donkey, a sheep, a goat, oh yes, and chickens! I hadn't thought about having a cow but fresh milk! Now theres a thought!
I did speak to my neighbours about getting chickens. My heart was set on getting chickens anyway and felt they would be ok with it! They were fine with it on both sides except the 85 year old to my left said I would be tied down and would not be able to go out. Bless her! That didn't make me change my mind! I think they make a bit of noise when they lay or if something upsets them. I say 'I think' as I haven't got mine yet....so I'm sure the nice friendly people on here will answer that for you. And me!
Some dogs and chickens seem to get along from what I have read and seen and the dog poo comes in handy to keep the foxes at bay! And so does your hubbys wee! And human hair! At least that is what I am led to believe! Maybe this lot on here have all been pulling my leg! :rotfl: Anyway, I cut my hubbys hair yesterday and scattered his hair clippings near the run. He is fine with the sprinkly bit too except I might just buy a jug and then 'water' the ground with it myself as I know if I were to ask him to do it he would do it in the wrong place! :rotfl: You can let them run around your garden but they can make a bit of a mess of your garden, scratching and pooing. I'm ok with that and have a compost bin eagerly awaiting it's accelerator. Some can also fly so may need their wings clipped so they don't go too far!
We have just finished an extension and our 6 foot wall that blew down in the high winds in February has just been rebuilt so we are already for chickens...should be getting them on Thursday.
As for now....I think I better try and get some more sleep. I worked all night last night...back working tonight and here I am online! I never learn!Single, free and young (ish) :heartpuls0 -

You and me both cw. I am so pleased that someone else here is sharing the ridiculously excitednessness at the same time as me!I have to ring the chicken lady up later to let her know that I am popping down. Although, we might be cutting it fine timewise on Thursday as dd has dancing at an after school club which means we might go on Friday before she has girl guides. So, fingers crossed for us both cw!

You lot are making me jealous, if only I could have some again.
I used to let mine roam the garden at weekends when I could keep an eye on them and if they showed to much interest in my fenced off vegetable plot, a clod of earth would be despatched in their general direction.
The racket which they would make when they laid however was handy. Whenever I heard it, I had to dash into the garden, discover which hen was the "culprit" and where she was. It was then a case of searching for the egg. Being weekend free range jobs, they would lay in the privet, under the shed, on top of the shed, I even found one egg in the (fortunately empty) bird bath.0
