And now the downside of keeping hens. Ours were all taken last night by a fox, we think. Just a few feathers left. I'm really upset, and need to tell the Small Penguins.

We've not had any evidence of *town foxes* here before.

    Penny. x

Sorry about your chickens PP, but I see you're getting some more.
The fox problem is getting bad, I used to quite like seeing the urban foxes but they really are breeding so much they're quite a nuisance - you'd use stronger language I reckon!
Did anyone see the Ch4 prog about foxes in London the other night? (That's where my sis stays)

Just wanted to add sorry to hear about your chickens Penny, it won't be long though until you have your new chicks.

I came home today to find something had killed a wild bird and there are feathers all over our lawn, thankful it wasn't one of our hens. A cat was looking at them the other day and they went mad and were noisy for hours afterwards.

Sorry if I missed it in another post, but we were also told that you can put human hair into tights and tie it around there run to keep away foxes.

Yesterday I rang up the place I was going to get my chickens from. 522.gif I was told they take up to 6 weeks as you have to order them! I can't wait 6 weeks!!!!!
So, I rang another two places and was told they had none either.
Getting chickens is harder work than I thought!

So, no chickens this weekend as I was hoping. 014.gif

Oh no!!!! I'm finding it really hard to find chickens too! One person I've spoken to said that there seems to be a general shortage of poultry at the moment....

  • Wow thanks so much CTC!

I've been trying to find a copy of the Smallholder mag and also the poultry keeper mag but haven't been able to do that either!!! Even forced myself to go to Borders yesterday and browse there for hours (it was a real hardship being one of my favourite things to do!) but they didn't have any.

i found when i was having the mag regular....i either had to order it from my local newsagents or i done a subscription to it....as its not really a very popular mag... to carry as stock on the shelves....i think the larger...w.h.smiths stock it...

but if you want to subscripe.... here's the no....01778 391135..

or go and have a look on quidco to see if any of the magazine companies stock it.....

You can also order individual copies of Country Smallholding, post free.

    Website here.

:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:
  • Ooh Fabulous! I didn't realise you could just buy one copy. Got it ordered!
  • Been in contact with two chicken breeders I found online:

I've been on the phone chatting to a lovely lady in Stockbridge who just returned an answer machine message I left yesterday. She has a couple of chickens left and the best news of all is that she has all the varieties on her website as from Thursday who are just having a few days to get over their vaccinations. Another lady in Liphook has birds ready this week too.
So, I think I am almost sorted. I won't be getting them on Saturday as hoped but got everything crossed for during the week.1219.gif
