you cant go wrong with black rocks.... even though i have never had any of them.... i heard they are hardly as old boots and very reliable layers......i dont think you wil be disapointed with that breed......
really glad you got some chickens on the way.....Work to live= not live to work0 -
LOL! You can be nosey - it's allowed!
It was the fosterschickens link. Thanks so much for that.
What you've heard about Black Rocks is exactly what I've heard which is why I was really keen to get some. Apparently they are really hardy, very docile and easy to handle and great layers. All sounds perfect for a first-time henkeeper! If I couldn't get those I was going to try and get some Rhode Island Reds.0 -

We had a pair of Plymouth Rocks some years back - I think they're related? Ours were lovely, black and white hens. Great layers and very friendly.
I've also used Ascott supplies. Really reliable, and well priced.

Thanks yet again CTC.
I found the Ascott-dairy link very handy and have bookmarked it for future reference.
Regarding the eggs and knowing which were laid when...I guess the way of dating eggs is by just writing the date and month on the egg in pencil? I was looking at the fancy stampers and the ink you have to use seems to be different. (food grade ink)

Hi
Sorry first post here and its on a heavy downer! Approximately one month ago we had the bulk of chickens stolen (11 of) leaving us with one cockeral and two hens. Well they managed to get in again last night and took the cockeral and one of the other hens. Leaving us with one partially sighted orpington. It just leaves me empty we had our first chickens 7 years ago, some of which have just been taken they were our pets. We survived a fox attack about 2 years ago upuntil which they were totally free range. Then we bought an electric fence to keep them safe thinking the only risk was the fox. So what do we do now? I am so not keen in supplying someone with their sunday lunch! but find having chicks so grounding and good for the children and the eggs are just unbeatable. The only bareable thought is that the poor things can't be that good to eat as not one was under 4 infact one was possibly somewhere between 8 and 10 years she was a adoption from someone moving to france. Well thats it really just wanted to share and see if anyone had suffered similar.
Thanks0 -
Hi BillyWhizz,
You really have had it rough!Since becoming interested in chickens myself I've heard of the foxes getting the chickens but people knicking them....that is really dreadful!
