In that case you should go back and read it again, paying particular attention this part instead of jumping to erroneous conclusions:

    Anyway the actual question.....

This evening she said she has been to some housing department of the local council for advice and been told that even though there is no contract, because she has paid a months rent in advance, I legally have to give her 28 days notice...
I didn't state my conclusion ( which has nothing to do with my replies either) - now who is imputing things..

So what part ( your boldings) is missing in post 29?

  • Are you claiming the OP is a liar?

As I said earlier, I'm taking the OP at their word and on that basis, I applaud their actions.

Where did I call the op a liar? Without knowing what was said you've found the lodger guilty. Evidence is usually needed, not hearsay.
Racism is generally held to be offensive as well as illegal. I can't believe anyone is trying to claim it can be considered otherwise, unless they're racists themselves, which would certainly explain it.
Ah, here we go, I wondered how long it would be before someone came out with the if you don't agree with me you must be racist comment.

Haha, ok, someone that doesnt agree with you must make me a racist..... I have friends of most races, and we joke about all sorts. Race is a common one to joke about. I am sure if it was offensive then they would not be my friends. I know what racism is, and agree there is no place for it.....

That is what I said, but it is not what Notmyrealname said!

Why should it be done that way? Because it's only fair to give everyone a chance, especially if they have been ill informed or thoughtless. What has normally got to do with it? If you have three dates with someone with polar opposite to yours on key issues do you continue to date and chat to them or do you politely decline their next offer? I prefer dating guys with different views but who are intelligent enough to realise that other viewpoints are valid and to hold a decent conversation/discussion. Persistent and fundamental disagreements on certain issues could be a dealbreaker though, of course. I terminated a date once because the guy was racist and it disgusted me, was I wrong? It's up to you, of course, though if it were me, my first thought would be explain why I found his remark offensive and to give him the chance to apologise and take back what he had said. I would personally consider it a bit extreme to end the date just because he said something I disagreed with - he may otherwise have been a lovely person - just in that moment he said something ill thought out/ill informed/silly/ignorant etc.

It's not for us to tell the OP how sensitive they should be when we don't even know what the comment was. For all we know the lodger is an active member of the National Front. For all we know the OP has a relative or friend who has been beaten for the colour of their skin, or works in a field where it would be damaging to have even a mildly racist housemate. I do agree it would help the discussion if the OP came back and told us what was said - though from my reading of the post itt sounds like it was just a comment and not that the OP had returned home from work to find the lounge newly wallpapered with a swastika print and the local NF group meeting taking place around the coffee table!

Not saying something offensive in your presence but continuing to be racist in word or deed elsewhere only stops your feelings being hurt, it doesn't make any difference in the world, doesn't stop others getting hurt. Sometimes it is necessary to change someone's view or adopt a zero tolerance attitude. Live and let live, I say. For example, many Muslims and Christians disagree with my views on homosexuality. This doesn't mean that I think that these religions should be banned. They are entitled to their opinions and I to mine, so long as we aren't hurting each other.

    That figures.

Racism- its a word or term that is widely used and poorly understood.

Racism is a fundamental assessment that there are different races in the world. We can attribute measurable objective characteristics traits and qualities, actions and beliefs to that.

It is then if we distort that, or place an evaluation of an innate inferiority, or superiority, that there is a problem.

Sorry but it's you who has misunderstood: both clearly fall under accepted definitions of racism.

    "Definition of RACISM

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
    2: racial prejudice or discrimination
    "

    "rac·ism   [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
    noun
    1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
    2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
    3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races
    ."

    "American Heritage Dictionary: rac·ism

    (rā'sĭz'əm)
    n.
    1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
    2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race

Now that is a stupid comment and really is imputing things :rotfl:

But I will leave breadcrumb that it had nothing to do with race or discrimination.....

You think my terminating a date extreme despite not being present at the date, not knowing if I did say anything, not bothering to ask what was said. Did the fact that I used the word 'disgusted' give you a clue that what was said was a little more than "in that moment he said something ill thought out/ill informed/silly/ignorant"?

My last ex was also what I would consider to be prejudiced/ mildly racist. He expressed an interest in voting for the BNP which I was shocked by. So we logged onto to their website; having read a few of their policies he realised I was correct that they are racist not simply patriotic. Unfortunately not everyone is like that, sometimes it is obvious from their first sentence on the subject.
