I don't think they doo need to be discreet. They need to make it obvious that you are being watched, so that people don't try to steal. If you don't like being watched, then don't use self service.

The member of staff could have said what he said in more polite way and not in a patronising tone, also shouldn't have said " well are you going to pay then " and stood next to the OP whilst she paid.

Why take a member of staff off the tills to watch a self service machine.
Would they not be better off having a extra 10 item or less lane.

The staff member's are also there to verify a person is over 21 to purchase Alcahol & remove the shopping tag.

(Yes,I said 21 as that is the lowest age limit that JS will sell booze to you, although I think it's gone up to 25 now, they have a policy called "Think 21")

Wasnt it challenge/think 25? Its not that you have to be 25, its just that if you look younger than 25, they'll challenge you for ID. But they'll still sell you as long as you're over 18 :)

Maybe they could. But we only have one side of the story.

It doesn't hurt to be polite, but some people just never come across as polite, and are often taken the wrong way.

Think it used to be Think 21 then was chnaged to challenge 25 or was it other way round, according to the sainsburys website here its think 25. Got it in 1 unholyangel, if you look under 25 your challenged for ID (which most people I served didnt have a problem with showing ID)

Something along those lines,I worked for them briefly in 2008 (online delivery TL) so IIRC it was 21 back then...

Yeah it was a 21 policy at around that time, but it was changed to 25 as i believe younger people eg under 18's could look older.

They call it challenge 25 in asda I believe, think 25 in sainsburys :D
There is still a think/challenge 21 for cigarettes.

When I was going out at 16/17, never got asked for ID. Hit 18 and bam, suddenly everyone wanted it :D A decade later and i'm still being asked. I reckon if i'm still being asked for it at 40......I must be aging gracefully :rotfl:

Why didn't you just say to the staff member "there's no need to be unpleasant/patronising is there, I just needed a little help".

IMO it's much better than reporting someone and possibly losing them their job. At the very least it lets them know that their attitude needs some adjustment :)
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
