Sainsburys staff - should I complain?

I popped into Sainsbury's yesterday at around 9am to get something for my lunch. Also had a look at the sale items and got a cardigan and some jeans. Only one checkout was open and there was someone using it so I decided to use the self checkout. A member of staff stood glaring at me while I used the machine. After I scanned the cardigan and put it down I got the 'unexpected item in the bagging area'.. I knew what it was straight away (the coat hanger) but the member of staff came rushing over, opened my shopping bags and said in a really patronising tone 'is that all you've got?' I said yes and she said well are you going to pay then? I had my cash in my hand aout to put it in the machine and she stood next to me while I paid. Felt really embarrised and I have no idea why she treat me like this. Should I complain ?

Yes, no question. If Sainsbury's didn't know when staff had a bad attitude then they'd never be able to re-train or fix the issue.Pants0

No.

No they didn't , they were looking bored , they have better things to do then glare at you.0 -
I was more annoyed that the member of staff opened my shopping bags..0

If you were unhappy with the way you were treated then yes you should let the company know. If they don't hear from us as customers what we like/don't like then how are they to know when a problem needs to be addressed?Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

Agree with this, they were there doing their job. What is 'glaring' anyway, what is the difference between glaring and looking.
She was simply looking around for people who looked as they needed help. You looked as if you needed help, you maybe spoke to her sharply, not saying that you did but attitudes and perceptions work both ways.
Do you think you were maybe a tad sensitive.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Well I felt like she was treating me like a thief. And no, i didn't speak to her sharply. All I said was 'hi' 'yes' and 'thanks'.. lol.0

The whole idea of the 'unexpected item' warning it to alert the staff to items and for them to check. If they didn't check what was on the scale what would be the point of the alert in the first place? Of course they are going to check what's on the scale.0

People have tried in the past to steal items, by scanning 1 and putting 2 in the bag. The advisors just doing their job.
There are so many people that don't understand self checkouts thats why the advisor is on hand should you get alerts.
After 6 months of using the self scan on my lunch breaks im now an expert LOL!0 -
One reason I never use a bag at the self service tills. Simply leave it all on the shelf and bag it up after paying.
Use your own bag, and unless they have been watching you put your shopping in. They will check your bag.
Never had a issue with a hanger causing over weight.
Once watched a faimly with a trolley go through the self service. Trolley was full of high value stuff, and they were crowded round the checkout. A staff member was attempting to watch, but called security over to monitor from another angle. Guy started kicking off about being watched.
Surfice to say they did not get any of their shopping out of the building as they were stopped at that point and the manager was called.
Between them they were told that they were going to leave the shop with nothing due to their attitude to staff who were simpy doing their job and as such were not to be abused.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
I work for Sainsbury's. I believe the colleague that served you should have been more discreet, so yes, I would complain. The thing with the self checkout is that sometimes people will try and bag things they haven't scanned in the hopes the attendant will verify it without checking. More often than not though, it's just people who don't understand how the machine works who have accidentally not scanned something. It's the attendants job to check if this is the case. They might not be suspecting you of stealing, more so suspecting you of being a self checkout amateur.0
