Sainsburys staff - should I complain?
Comments

They do have to check your bags when the machine says there is an unexpected item in the bagging area, to check if something wasn't scanned or scanned incorrectly. Staff have checked my bags before and I don't mind because I have nothing to hide.
The member of staff might have looked annoyed at the machine not you if it was an error. The only thing I think they did wrong was asking if you were going to pay, which implies you might not have. They should simply have said, 'it's sorted, you can pay now' which sounds more polite because it presumes you were going to pay anyway.
You could complain but I think they were probably following the security policy by checking the bagging area and issues like saying they looked at you the wrong way are really subjective.0 -
, it's just people who don't understand how the machine works who have accidentally not scanned something. It's the attendants job to check if this is the case. They might not be suspecting you of stealing, more so suspecting you of being a self checkout amateur.
I had a belter of this today.......
Not even scanned a single item and it came up with the message....
No wonder the staff look so fed up. Still my guy was just :rotfl:Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
I also work for JS but that doesn't mean im going to defend them, i have to agree with smj in that the member of staff could have gone about it more discreetly or in a more polite manner. Yes why not complain, sounds like the member of staf needs a quiet word.0

I don't think they doo need to be discreet. They need to make it obvious that you are being watched, so that people don't try to steal. If you don't like being watched, then don't use self service.0 -

I have to disagree. That wouldn't be fair to the majority of people who have no intention of not paying for their shopping. Obviously we do have to watch everyone because there is no easy way to tell a shop lifter but there is no reason to make a point of doing it.0 -
And the award for biggest over-reaction of the week goes to...
Honestly, I've had loads of these pain in the backside people to deal with up and down the UK high street. Apparently we live in a time where there are 50 people all seeking one job yet they seem to be employing complete idiots. Don't let it get to you, just stick your tongue out at them and move on.0 -
Why take a member of staff off the tills to watch a self service machine.
Would they not be better off having a extra 10 item or less lane.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0 -

Actually at the store I work at (not Sainsburys) we are told to deter shoplifters through good customer service, not treating everyone like a potential thief! Being extra polite and attentive shows shoplifters they are being watched without offending genuine customers.1 -

Because you can have 1 staff member overseeing multiple self scan machines. And the majority of transactions probably go through without any problem. Buying alcohol, anything with a security device fitted (such as dvd's, clothes etc) tend to set the sensors off. Sometimes with baked goods too (i imagine the products weight is out with the limits set for the sensor).
Our local has 16 self scan machines with 1 staff member per 8 machines. They can see on their screen everything you scan. Like an overview type thing. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
