if you use a mobile, upgrade next time to a smartphone [eg mda vario, orange spv, nokia n series] usually the phone will be free on a contract, then all you need to get is a copy of tomtom mobile and a bluetooth gps device.

Over the course of the contract it may work out about the same as a cheapo standalone, but you would have had a phone service / bundled minutes also.

At the end of the contract, you would have a phone to sell with tomtom, which is an asset you can earn a premium for over a vanilla phone:-).

plus when you leave the car unattended you don't have a ridiculous 'come steal me' suction mount marking - you're always carrying the phone [and satnav] with you. the bluetooth gps is the size of a matchbox.

If you're looking for an orange contract, the new SPV M700 comes with built-in GPS, saving the need for a bluetooth gps. it also has a nice big screen
  • I got a bit excited when I saw that Netto were selling an Evesham unit, I think for about £129.

I checked and it seems that their price is £10 more than getting it from evesham.com!

I did email them... and have only received an automated reply.
  • If you want maps of Europe on sat nav the cheapest I found was the Garmin Street pilot 320 at £129 from Amazon. It comes with a 128mb card and to put all the maps of Europe on you need a 1gb card-cheaply available on Amazon (thanks for the tip in the newsletter a few weeks ago). I used this in France last week and found it to be invaluable. Just don't tell me you can find it £30 cheaper elsewhere!

    Hi guys and gals

I would really appreciate your help here, as I am totally confused and not to mention clueless...!

I want to buy a sat nav for my dad, but have no idea which one to get, and which is the best one out there.:confused:

I dont mind spending up to £200 to get a reliable one as we drive around london alot and always get lost!!

Someone recommended TomTom one, is that any good?

    Thanks all

What many people seem to be missing here is the "additional costs" with these units.

Updated speed ( I refuse to call them safety) camera and map info can easily add another £60 plus per year. If you buy a popular make e.g. TomTom then you can find internet sites where you can download for free. Buy a less well known brand and the manufacturer has you over a barrel.

The Tomtom ONE Europe, Garmin NUVI 310 Deluxe and 350 & 360, Garmin C510 Deluxe & C550, MIO C510e and Navman N20 and F20 Europe, also lots of less well known brands, but not such a good investment as limited customer support.

I was looking at buying this model from Halfords but wasn't sure if it also has a "Safety Camera" detection device. Does anyone know if it does as I don't want a load of different gadgets over the dash? I need one that combines Sat Nav, Camera detector and Handsfree phone capabilities, any recommendations?

I can recommend the NUVI 310, really nice. With regard to speed cameras, satnavs do not detect cameras they just alert you when they are close because they know where you are and they know where the cameras are because you put a file on the satnav containing the location of all the camera sites. Its not a radar detector which works by alerting you when it detects a radar beam.
