the Co-op carronshore falkirk had the mio c210 sat nav for £65 yesterday, might be worth phoning your local store.

Get one of these if you can, much better than the others at this price, I can't find one near me unfortunately!! Other wise go for the Garmin i3, or if you need europe maps with it perhaps this one for £115+p+p, review here

If your not sure, go for the Tomtom ONE for £145,
or the Garmin C510 which can be found in SOME Sainsburys and Halfords(managers special) for £100.

Whatever manufacturers Satnav you get try to make
sure the GPS unit has a Sirf III chipset.

This is by far the best at aquiring and keeping a satellite lock. Older chipsets tend to drop the signal easily especially in cities and going through tunnels.
  • The SatNav may be cheap. Don't forget to check the price of map updates - but then if they are more than the device: buy a new device !

A Top Tip to extend the serviceability of your Garmin MapSource device (eg: a StreetPilot series GPS) is:
    - buy
    - don't register it [yet], but keep all the reference numbers and registration cards etc.
    - wait for a map update to be released by Garmin
[ by watching their web site ]
    - register
    - follow instructions for a free update disk

This works once because, under their T's + C's, if you buy a device with an old map then you are entitled to a free update. They do not, however, legislate for purchase date and therefore they use the date of registration :D .

You will also then get PC software to manage your maps and Favourites and exchange these with the device.

    Enjoy.

All the models below rely on GPS (Global Positioning System). This means they shoot signals up to satellites which tell them exactly where they are on the globe...

    • Garmin StreetPilot i3 <snip>
    • NavMan F20 £122 incl delivery This budget box boasts a bigger touch-screen than those above <snip>

Just a couple of corrections, Martin. SatNav devices use inbuilt GPS receivers: Nothing is transmitted anywhere, so for those who might be concerned about privacy, there's no way (with these devices at least) for the authorities to keep a track of you.

Also, the i3 does not have a touch screen, it uses a rolling button. It actually makes this device safer (in my opinion) as there is less temptation to fiddle while moving.

There is no need to pay for speed camera databases and many other POI's (points of interest) as they are freely available on the web. http://www.poiedit.com/ provides a wide range, mostly free, and free software to automate the update process.

GARMIN NUVI 310 is available from Amazon for £158 - should be £200+ Slightly more than what is being considered; however it comes with loads of extras - mp3 player, Audible book player and more importantly Hands Free bluetooth for a compatible phone!
I couldn't find this anywhere for under £195 and thought it was an error. Mine arrives and so have my friends!
You can update it from the Garmin site thorugh the use of free Garmin Software and they will also provide new maps for installation if they have released others since the device was installed. Mine arrive with Version 8 and Version 9 in coming by post for free!
    Fully recommended Satnav
