*sigh*
Don't talk to me about winter coats! If I could just shed a wee bit of lard I could manage to fasten the coats I already have instead of freezing my bits off trying to look like I'm so casual and I don't need to close my coat.:rotfl:
I'm not buying another one in yet another bigger size! I'll just buy a huge scarf.
see thats whats happened to me:( I had to have a hip replacement and put on loads of weight and since the op ive just been ill so unable to get well enough to actually shift the weight, its got to the point though i am going to have to get out of house more than once a fortnight ..so i either stitch a towel down the front of coat to expand it:eek::rotfl: or buy a new one. I did like some of the asda coats i saw online ( well for £19 quid they are a bargain:p) but as im short i cant buy one without trying it on and the nearest asda is a couple of bus journeys away...***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -

just seen on ebay (sorry i can't do links) a "long waterproof coat" regatta, down to £39.99 ( its new btw,not second hand!)so tempted.
also, got some lovely wellies from s*insb*rys this week, they are shiny black at the foot, and quilted up the leg, have sprayed the leg bit with waterproofing spray, love 'em !LIVE SIMPLY * GIVE MORE * EXPECT LESS * BE THANKFUL0 -
Don't forget, you can always take a coat to a specialised dry cleaner or tailor who can make alterations. Hemlines aren't such a big deal but if you want arms taken in or shoulders reduced then make sure you find a tailor rather then an ordinary dry cleaner.0

I am splurging on a Jack Wolfskin parka style 3 in one. I cant put the price up as Im ashamed
In my defence I have limited mobility and feel the cold to hypothermic degree in the freezer aisle of the local supermarket and I wear my furry boots all year. I have had two JW fleeces before so really like the quality.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

You can get hoods which add on too. I know it is a lot of money, but this is a jacket that will last a lifetime. I'm sure Barbour re-wax for free as well if at any point it needs it.
Not free, their charges depend on the type of garment but a jacket is now around £30 to re-proof.
I have Barbour jackets that are nearly 20 years old and are as good (and warm and waterproof) as new... I remember buying my first and it was around £140 (20+ years ago) and anguishing over the costs - but if you divide that by the number of years I've used it... it becomes very, very cost effective.
Edited to add... it's worth remembering that the very warmest materials will be wool, down or fleece and that the majority of 'fashion' coats may not keep you warm just because they look like the fabric is thick and heavy.:hello:0 -
Bought mine from H&M as I find they usually do good ones made out of a kind of felty(?) material which seem fairly waterproof. Mine doesn't have a hood but they did have some which did. It was £25 but I know from experience they do last (have just passed one which was too small down to my sister!).:j Tehya Baby DD 22/03/2012 :j

I have the same problem, sort of needed a new one last one but def can't get away with putting it off again this year. I really struggle to find any I like. And why do so many coats seem to not have hoods now? I live in Scotland - I NEED a hood - surely shops here should understand that - but apparently not
I just bought a teal duffel coat - with hood!- from BHS for £65. Not my dream coat by any means, but I struggle to find something that ticks all the boxes, so it's nice enough.0 -

A North Face with detachable fleece inner.
A navy Barbour lookalikey - Florence and Fred last year.
A taupe full length one, down to my ankles, this is by Windsmoor and is fitted at the waist and looks lovely.
A black smart wool thigh length one.
A tweed knee length one, 1940s style.
A khaki Per Una parka.
Perhaps you should start up a winter coat rental scheme Myrtle! :rotfl:0 -

I think I've just seen and liked this one! Is it the formal coat and if so, what kind of fit is it please?0
