I've been looking at...M&S, NorthFace, Burberry, Barbour, Debenhams, River Island, Topshop...

    Ugh. Burberry's winning atm
  • I went looking for a nice mac last night to take away on holiday with me - heading to Dubrovnik today and it's not going to be cold but lots of rain forecast. Really hard to find one, and even harder to find a nice one.

I bought a navy one in BHS in the end out of desperation as the shops were closing but I was disappointed with the range on offer most places. In both House of Fraser and John Lewis I got the reply "what's a mac?" when I asked the shop assistants where I could find them. Oh and some of the ones I did see were very much more granny style - what is wrong with wanting to be dry and stylish!

Should have avoided Oxford Street and trailed round a few different branches of Hobbs instead - they had some nice ones in their concession in John Lewis but as per usual only seemed to have small sizes in stock. (Makes my blood boil how often shops don't stock enough larger sizes even when the companies make them. I know I need to lose weight, but they should still want my custom in the meantime)

Taking my tog 24 waterproof anyway, it's not exactly stylish but it is in my favourite deep turquiose colour so it could be worse.

I don't need a heavier winter coat, got a nice deep teal wool knee length one in Hobbs and a deep green padded one in Per Una last year and still have some servicable wool jackets and a full length coat, also from Hobbs. Only way I am buying something new is if I finally lose some serious amounts of weight and the old coats end up hanging off me. There are lots of lovely coats in Hobbs I'd have been tempted by if I needed one.
  • If you have a TK Max in your area , they have a wide range of coats and the prices are good .

I cant find a single one that I really like.

    Ugh.

I'm still wearing the one I got 2 years ago. Its not just because I can't afford another one, its because I also can't find anything that I like better.

I'd visit a few stores and get a few opinions from decent shop style/shopper people, take a picture of everything you have, sit back over a coffee and then go back to the store of the coat you like the most.

It can also help to take a friend with you, if only so you have someone to chat to and take your mind off the whole thing!

I haven't bought (and not returned) a coat in years but have loads of old ones but none are quite right! I would love a barbour but the styles aren't quite what i want and are just so much money. If they did a wax jacket bum length-ish with a taller collar that could stand up and had a thick, big detachable hood then I'd spend £200+! Even if they did sold a nice jacket and just a hood I could add buttons for myself :D
I always find waterproof coats have a really thin too small hood and I can't be dealing with brollies in really bad weather.

  • well:(
the coats arrived today, the joe browns Jacket is darker than pictured but style wise it really was amazing, the lining inside was like autumn leaves and i imagined myself running skipping amongst the autumn foliage:rotfl:
sadly though it was too big on shoulders and i looked lost in it, totally gutted...im 5 foot 2 inches and my shoulders are a size 6 whilst my hips are a size 12:mad: so its all getting gradually wider as it heads towards my hips... this coat needed a woman with wider shoulders to balance it out...so i cant keep it as its just not going to do justice to the coat:(
the "other" parka was ..well just that, a rather ugly parka that is warm and well wintery, basically it makes me feel crap:rotfl:
i dont really want to pay nigh on £80 quid for a coat that doesnt give me any joy but oh keeps saying it looks nice and warm along with the kids....:(
    save me from these people:eek::rotfl:

    *sigh*

Don't talk to me about winter coats! If I could just shed a wee bit of lard I could manage to fasten the coats I already have instead of freezing my bits off trying to look like I'm so casual and I don't need to close my coat. :o:rotfl:

I'm not buying another one in yet another bigger size! I'll just buy a huge scarf. :D

Also the name Fiftyplus might put you off but they actually have a lot of nice coats on this site at a reasonable price. This is the one I actually bought in black. I am 5'4" and have narrow shoulders and it looks very nice, quite fashionable and it is warm. I have not stopped wearing it since it arrived and haven't worn any of my other coats and jackets. Its quite light and also waterproof with a concealed hood so great at the price and Regatta is generic, not just for oldies. (I am fifty plus) They also have one with a fur trimmed hood and lots of other coats that may be suitable.

thanks for the mention of Asda earlier - I'm now set for winter :). I've gone all colourful compared to previous years. I got my thigh-length black coat from Matalan (a grabbit) last year for £9, still wearing that, I bought a red thigh-length (a grabbit) this week from Store Twenty One £9.99, I have a black army greatcoat type coat that I bought from Etam at least 12 years ago which is still going strong (that did cost around £60 though, and is the most expensive clothing item I have ever bought).
And then today, I bought a mulberry coloured belted knee-length coat from George at Asda, £25 (oh, and a pair of waterproof boots ;)). I went straight outside and put the boots on, because its a bit chilly out of the sun today!;)
