and they've acknowledged my claim. Does this mean they're likely to file a defence?

Help! I've stumbled at the first hurdle. How do I obtain a past account number when I've destroyed all information relating to it? Will the banks be able to supply this information if they have my full name, date of birth and address details? Can I still send the "first template letter" enclosing cheque for £10.00 rather than await details of my account number?

Thanks in anticipation of your help. x

    Hi Ladysnowy

I had this with HSBC. I phoned them and they took my name, postcode and then took me through security. I could remember my old password though.

I dont think it really makes any difference its just a scare/timewasting tactic. They did this for me and then didnt defend.

I have now sent off the first 2 letters to my bank (1 the end of October, the other a week ago). I sent them recorded, I tracked them and it says they've been delivered. However Nationwide haven't replied to either, is this what usually happens?

Yup this is the usual thing with a lot of organisations. Just keep to your dates and timescales and good luck!

  • Barclays Bank PLC (Barclaycard) and Lloyds TSB were both issued today and now have 14 days to respond!!!!!
    God, i'm really excited!!!!!
  • I am about to embark on the refunding -- thanks for all the opinions and how to do it. I have two questions:

    1) Can the same be applied to mortgages?! I have just paid my existing provider £600 to move to another product with them!

    2) Is it true that the bank can write back and say they no longer want your custom?

    Thanks.
  • Sorry if this has been mentioned on a previous post but Im really nervous about this and just want to clarify things in my head before i go all guns blazing

When a direct debit is rejected because I did not have enough funds my bank give me a one off charge (i presume this is what you can reclaim) but how about the overdraft charge for taking me over my over draft??

    Thanks

I have now realised earning more money won't make me richer but clearing my debts will!!
  • Around 10 years ago, my husband banked with First Direct. His salary was paid into his account on the 8th of every month and he set up his direct debits to also come out on this date. Every month First Direct would pay all of my husband direct debits before paying in his salary, hence making him overdrawn. They charged around £20 for each direct debit which was paid out totalling around £200 per month. This was about 10 years ago, but put my husband into a lot of debt, his parents eventually had to bail him out. Does anyone know if there is a time limit to claim back charges.
