Problems with Iphone 5 Glass Screen is weak - breaks too easily.

Hi,

Has any one else had issues with the Screens and Glass on the new Iphone 5?

Also opening the packaging for the Iphone?

My wife has just purchased a Iphone 5 from Apple direct and we got the Sim for it last night, as she opened the box the phone fell out as it was not secured inside and it dropped from waist height onto a carpeted floor and the Glass screen has cracked the crack radiating from hole for the ear-set.

First we are really concerned how easily the Iphone 5 Screen cracked... is there a batch issue with the glass on the Iphone 5 perhaps or is the design of the Iphone 5 more flimsy? Especially when you have spent £600 on a new phone which you would expect to be shock resistant, We have had several Iphone's (3GS and 4) over the last four years and always found them to be very robust and take a drop to the floor no problems.

My wife immediately contacted Apple Customer services to explain what had happened and was passed around 4-5 people and left on hold for 15 minutes. She was told that it would cost £300 for a replacement and Apple would not help out and after asking for a manager the representative told her they would contact her in the morning to see what they could do - I think this was a fob off to get her off the phone as first thing in the morning she got a dismissive email from the representative.

We have been disappointed by Apple several times in the last few months as recently found out the Apple Ipad 3 which we also purchased earlier this year is not compatible with UK 4G networks.

Come on Apple I thought your customer services we supposed to be legendary? Not impressed so far.....

If any one else has had issues with the durability of the Iphone 5 Glass and also that Apple should secure the phones inside the box so that they don't fall out it when opening would be good to hear from you.

Most phones use Gorilla Glass, but it's used in handsets for its scratch resistance but its not shatterproof.

Glass is an odd material, it can take all sorts of impacts but get the angle wrong and it will shatter. I'm not sure how you can say it's Apples fault as your wife dropped it and to my knowledge no maker secures a cellphone into the packing.

Why did you tell them you dropped it, should have just said it arrived like that and it would have been replaced for free, lots of people have reported that they have had damaged phones on opening the box and they have all had replacements.

Yes both good points, however as noticed with the first batch of Iphone 4's we know a few people who's buttons started failing, looking at how the glass has failed it could be a manufacturing defect in the iphone 5 looking to see if others are having the same issues then could be a recall issue.

Yes, but we are honest and felt this the best approach.

Yes from looking at this Video it seem more likely to me that there was a manufacturing defect with our Iphone five - perhaps the Glass had a small imperfection in it?

Lesson learned, honesty is not always the best policy.

    scubadog,

You are to be congratulated on your honesty. It may cost you financially, but at least your conscience is clear.

If the Glass was defective then yes they should replace it, if the phone 5 is not designed to fall 2 feet onto a carpet okay I guess we should pay for new glass? But then how many people drop their phones every day Apple haven't even looked at the possibility that the phone may have a manufacturing defect in the glass.
