  • People have presumed that the painter and decorator was a professional and more than likely he was not.
And that's where my argument comes into it regarding basic instructions.

Oh I know he isn't a professional. A professional would've known what to do with the paper! :P

I was simply taking OP on face value that it is indeed a painter and decorator instead of the OP misrepresenting facts. After all, while its possible its a family member/friend, its also equally likely that someone has decorated a fair bit at home and thought "hey I could make money doing this" without realising that they don't know the half of it.

The point is the painter and decorator was paid to do the job and did it poorly. There was nothing wrong with the paper. Not everything has to or does come with instructions. I bought eggs today, what do I do with them as there no instructions? If I make a souffle 'off the top' of my head and it turns out to be inedible can I get my money back?
  • Women have given birth since day one but we still have a midwife telling them when to push.
Can we now please quit with the analogies lol

Yes some things do come without instructions but the vast majority of stuff tells you what it is.

    Most things come without instructions I'd say....but you're right a bag of flour tells you it's flour...no instructions though...a bag of sugar....fruit.....veg.....spanners....wallpaper...nails....cable ties....rubber bands....:D?

Guardsman have you actually had experience of this type of paper? I'm willing to bet that you as a competent painter and decorator would open up a roll of the paper in question and go 'hold on' a minute what have I got here?. I've seen this type of paper years ago and realised it should be trimmed and I'm a pretty average decorator.
  • Slowhand let's just go with the wallpaper.
Do you think that it would be a problem if they printed basic instructions on the roll even if it's only " This paper needs to be trimmed..Would that not be useful information for your average customer.
Of course everyday items do not need instructions unless they need to be used in a special way.

  • No I have never seen that paper in my life and I have always done my own decorating.
Then again I could have picked it up several times and not liked the edging and moved on.

Right wallpaper it is then. No I don't think it's necessary to print special instructions, the paper in question is visually very clearly not a standard wallpaper and I would realise that especially at that price point ask questions as I'm sure you and any other reasonable decorator would.
  • I've just done a quick google search and the terms I used were wallpaper professional grade untrimmed.

Of the first 3 results, two specifically referred to the need to trim this grade of wallpaper (the other result was a Wiki page.)
Our paper and grasscloth is hung with a standard clear wallpaper paste. As this is a hand-printed product and arrives untrimmed, we suggest working with a professional wallpaper installer for best results.
One roll of Juju Papers wallpaper is 27” wide and 15’ long. The wallpaper arrives untrimmed, which means that it has a selvage that is removed during installation. We recommend that all of our clients consult with a professional paper hanger prior to installation.
