    Hi Joe

i really dont think this is necessary, as others have said you rarely know when a competition has started and as for those few where ppl post them saying for e.g E: 11/11 opens 04/11, well i think they should just be deleted straight away !

If ppl find a competition that will be starting soon, they should just make a note of it, set a reminder, add it to a calendar and then post it when its live

However, if you are going to add this start date idea, please make sure it is autofilled with the current date at time of posting, with the option to change it

    :shhh:

Apparently everything has a happy ending and if you havent arrived at the happiness, it hasnt ended yet

START DATE - not needed at all

END DATE - must be compulsory

Tick box for "Is this end date estimated" - highly desirable

Notes: End date is only needed on the main forum (f=72) and not on the others (f=73/74/93/215), although the end date needs to be transferred with the thread when the thread is moved to Game Over (f=74)

The forum MUST be capable of being SORTED by end date.

It is HIGHLY DESIRABLE the forum is SEARCHABLE by end date.

It is DESIRABLE that the forum is searchable for estimated dates, or that a sort including only estimated end dates is possible.

End date, and the estimated "flag" must be editable by the OP (& BGs)

Point to consider: We currently try to start thread titles with E: 31/12 which takes up 8 characters. If the title actually started with the 8 characters 20121231 either visibly or "behind the scenes" (and formatted to display as 31/12) then it would SORT and SEARCH much better. 20121231 is searchable as it contains no spaces or punctuation, and the sort order (sort by title, descending) would be correct automatically.

I cannot see any point to a start date as it would only matter if the date was in the future and that is very very rare.

If you go with an end-date field then it should be a required field which would then stop incorrectly titled threads being added (I cannot see any other point to it as providing the correct format has been used the threads can already be arranged in date order if required)

    They can be sorted in the order 30/12, 30/11, 30/10.....30/01, 29/12, 29/11 but can't be sorted in true date order 31/10, 30/10, 29/10, 28/11.....

I agree with most of the others, no start date is needed in my opinion. I think for the end date, if that could be kept so it should be put on, I am an end date comper (except for this week as am off on hols) so this would be needed by myself, and others who comp end date. If the unknown end dates could have something so they all come up together.

Probably too much to ask but fingers crossed :)
    Thanks to all posters :A

    Start date - not needed

End Date - happy if its added

If you are looking at adding these fields, would these be a way that we could get the FB, Twitter, Blog, titles marked up so that we could search for them easier too.

Ability to search the comps board easier, as Cornish Pasty and BluBlu have explained earlier would be fantastic.

Ability to hit X or Tick buttons from the forum page rather than inside a thread as a few others have asked, may be useful aid.

I really, really appreciate all the work you have done with our Comps board and esp with you all letting us being able to contribute to the changes, xxxx

PS - could you actually split from this thread and put your post along with these replies in a new thread, so that other people realise these changes are being discussed, xxx
My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly :)

Our Precious Baby Tianna has now joined our Family, she is much loved and very welcome, xxx

True, (although I always flip sort to ascending) but it takes almost no time to move on....For example at the moment comps ending 29/10 finish part way down page 207 and those ending 30/10 begin on page 209 so only one page to pass over and that just involves looking at the last post on it to see if 30/10 had started or not (even if there were more pages in between you only need look at the last post on each).

Quite a few of us add guessedenddate but this seems not to have been fully taken on by some.
I'm not sure what is proposed but hopefully we do not end up with to much added to the title section, that then needs to be edited. That would just slow things down when posting a series of comps.
I'll feel more able to comment when I understand more of what is proposed rather than the abstract discussion we have atm.

Responses to this would be very helpful.

I have posted my opinion but on further thought my opinion and that of many others should not count for a great deal (apart from the obvious no to entering a start date).

What really matters is the opinion of those who post the bulk of the competitions, what works best for then when posting and would the possible change make posting faster or slower.
