Edwardia, I'm interested in your low carb approach - I have Type 1 diabetes (since age 11) and am thinking about a more paleo approach with the hope of reducing my insulin requirements as much as possible. Any tips from your experiences?0

Parisian, I'm a type 2 so I low carb so that I don't need to have so many meds or go onto insulin. I would guess for a type 1 person fewer carbs means less insulin needed. I don't know whether there would be other health benefits.
The type 1 doctor who is the guru for type 1 low carbers is Dr Richard Bernstein MD. His book is Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and a revised and updated edition came out in 2011. Not sure if available in UK but would be on Amazon US I guess.
British doctor Dr Charles V Clark also wrote a book on low carbing including a section on transitioning for people with type 1 but the recipes he included often seemed quite high in carbs to me. It's called The Diabetes Revolution and you can get it from Amazon UK.
I have been lucky to email with doctors and researchers abroad who answered my questions, I had to do all the leg work myself to find people ad books and websites. The NHS line was (maybe still is ?) eat carbs and take the meds. I'm not doing anything that wasn't done routinely before oral meds for type 2 diabetes existed from the 70s.
HTH xx
Oh and for anyone without diabetes interested in low carbing without doing freaky Atkins stuff then I would suggest Dr John Briffa's book Waist Disposal. It's soo clear and well laid out and explains enough of the science to make sense. It's supposed to be for men but women have used it. It's not a diet so much as changing the way you eat so you don't need to do diets anymore. I gave copies of it to my relies who were mystified by low carb or going eek Atkins.
As for primal and paleo as WOEs (ways of eating) if interested

Few more smaller schemes listed at the bottom of the article, for anyone around the Surrey Downs area:

Despite snow, got the Neal's Yard Remedies detox tea from John Lewis for OH. :j
Website on side of packaging https://www.nealsyardremedies.com and they have lots of others. Bit expensive but certified organic and you only have 1 tsp per cup so they should last awhile.0 -
Just going through a pre xmas Waitrose w/end mag and there's an advert for Bart Spices with an organic cinnamon in the pic, didn't realise Bart had organic items now, not checked to see how many things in the range.0

Recently I run out of black peppercorns and when we did our weekly shopping i bought Bart fairtrade organic black peppercorns 40 g grinding mill refill pack. I am very impressed, much better flavour and stdonger taste than non organic peppercorns:j“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”

If the link works it's the Bart shop on Ocado.
Unlogged in, Sainsbury's website didn't show any organic Bart stuff but that may not be accurate as it didn't show non-organic stuff I had bought before <confused>0 -
Thanks Edwardia!
I'm a doctor myself, and realise that the UK/NHS view will just mean me eating lots of carbs/taking lots of insulin! What kinds of things do you eat? I bought Dr. Bernsteins book a good few years ago, but found it a bit restrictive at that age - but will look at it again. Thanks for the other suggestions too. Have you heard of Whole9 and the Whole30 programme? I'm thinking of following that x

I had a look in Waitrose this morning as I needed peppercorns so got the Waitrose organic ones. But they did have a reasonable selection of the Bart organic items too, I guess I just go straight to the Waitrose ones without looking so just hadn't even noticed them before.
Also, for anyone growing their own, this place is good, cheap, fast as I've used them in the past.

I would go for the own brand organic first too if they had what I wanted. Need to find more organic herbs as 'gaps' in my selection now.
Netherend Farm organic ghee arrived today. Doesn't mention on the blurb but it is certified. Yes, expensive, but we only use it for frying eggs and mushrooms and Indian stuff so will last months. It has a best before date of 14 August which confuses me because as long as you keep it dry it doesn't go off and in India you can buy 100yr old ghee.
