  • Not strictly organic, but wondering what brand choccies to get as a treat for Christmas? Usually get Thorntons Continentals but fancied a change...any recommendations for a box of assorted choccies?

I like G&B's (think they do a box selection as well as the bars/taster selection - I wish someone would buy that for me!) or Coco Loco choc is nice though not sure if they do boxes - I've had the buttons and the xmas shaped chocs.

Chocolate.. I was horrified to see the usual Price Up Size Down on the Lindt Lindor so not buying that for my mother this year. Being the daughter and granddaughter of a chocolatier I have to confess that neither of us would touch Thorntons. If I was being a real glutton I'd go for Leonidas https://www.leonidas.com

Tesco has the Green & Black's Tasting Collection for £10 (£1 off until 05/11, plus £1 off the Milk & White Collection at 4.50 same date but NOT the Dark & White Collection. However Waitrose has both Milk & White and Dark & White Collections for 4.50 at the moment.

The Husband likes Montezuma smooth milk chocolate giant buttons (180g 2.75 Riverford) but they taste too much like Galaxy to me :(

Haven't tried them but Abel & Cole has Montezuma 8 milk chocolate chunky snowmen 110g 4.99; Cocoa Loco brownie mini bites with white chocolate 200g 2.99 plus handmade mixed or champagne truffles - 115g champagne for 5.99 and 230g mixed for 9.99 - and btw Green & Black's 100g bars 20% off at 1.65 ;)

Has anyone had Booja Booja chocolates ?

Whole Foods may have been a tad disappointing Kirri but it has to be better than ASDA !

It is looking like gluten/wheat is the problem because OH hasn't had stomach ache since he stopped eating it. Yesterday bought him gluten free cereal flakes, rolls, sliced brown bread, tinned spaghetti and wow it's expensive

I've been meaning to try the Booja Booja ice cream, not had the chocs.

For gluten free treats have a look at Honeybuns, I think they are additive free but can't remember - I won a tin of their gluten free cakes, they are so good, you wouldn't know they were gluten free (unlike most gf things I've tried).

Oh only a few disappointing things at WF - I could spend a fortune in there.. g/pigs are just enjoying some of their organic cavolo nero :D

Yep, as a veggie I'm more used to being the one the venue has to be chosen around but with gf I say she chooses - it's a bit shocking how few places cater for it, not in providing alternative items but it seems more naturally gf items could be on menus.

Friend does the same, occasionally eats things that will cause problems on say a Friday night when she can be at home the next day.

In my town, only one cafe/restaurant that I am aware of caters for gluten free - and I live in a town full of food outlets. Most people if you ask just stare at you as if you are asking for something horrific, others just say 'sorry...'

I am hoping to go vegetarian when my last old girl (cat) passes on. I'm not sure how though - vegetarian and gluten free will be a challenge!

Lindt is always a winner in my household. Not heard of Leonidas. Can this be bought in shops?

Gluten free is hideously expensive - often the decision is - gluten free and expensive or the cheaper gluten products but may not feel too great after - horrible situation to be in and companies take advantage of those with poor health as per usual. It's often £2.50+ for a tiny loaf of bread

Hope everyone having a good weekend. Windy and wet here so apart from a brief foray to Sainsbos with my mother, been chilling with mugs of tea and candles.

Pizza Hut - whether eat-in, delivery or takeaway, does gluten free bases for all its' pizzas. Nothing organic though and no idea how many additives there are in the food either, but there are veggie options available. https://www.pizzahut.co.uk

Miroslav, the Leonidas website will give details but they are sold in:

Leonidas (New Bond St, Baker St, Ealing Broadway, St Helier)
    Harrods
    L'Art du Chocolat in Kensington
    Manon Cafe branches
    Panmar at Liverpool St station
Pearle (St John's Wood, Edgware, Reading)
    Cachao, Regent's Park Rd
    Le Chocolatier, Highgate.

    Outside of London..

Just For You, Royal Tunbridge Wells
All Wrapped Up, Heathfield, E Sussex and Thame
    Truffles Chocolatiers, Stratford Upon Avon
    Nucleus, Chalfont St Peters
    Bridge Gifts, Chester
    Sweet Serendipity, Leyburn
Belgian Chocolate & Coffee Shop, Frodsham
    Leo's Deli, Framlingham
    Serendipity, Saltaire
    Jenners, Edinburgh
Suffolk Food Hall at Wherstead Hall, Ipswich
    Leopold's, Northampton

Previously I found them in Selfridges, Chocology in Oxford and the Hilton Metropole off Edgware Rd but they might not be there now.

Be warned.. they taste amazing but aren't cheap !!

Genius sliced brown gluten free loaf is £3  OH tried Sainsbury's Freefrom gluten free rolls (yellow sticker) and liked them. Reduced, they cost more than organic.

^ Pizza Express started doing a GF base this year too.

Also, think mentioned on here before, but I read another article earlier on using wild yeasts, with the thought it's the fast production/fast commercial yeasts that may cause issues for some people.

There was a bit on the Bake Off Masterclass this week, when they made a lovely looking rye loaf, about wheat free and gluten free so rye is wheat free but not gluten free? - but I get confused about the two issues or how to tell which causes what issues.

I got two organic items in the post from Steenbergs today, forgot I'd signed up ages ago to be part of the taste panel. Lovely items, can't wait to try them.

Wheat, rye, barley, triticale, spelt, kamut, bulgar, semolina and couscous all contain gluten.

Other cereals may be contaminated with gluten during processing. For someone with coeliac disease that's a big problem and they need to look for gluten free and even then be wary.

OH doesn't have coeliac disease but bread made from wheat flour is giving him stomach ache and digestive issues generally whereas the gluten and wheat free Genius bread for example has no effect.

I'm still learning but amaranth, buckwheat, millet, tapioca, rice, quinoa, oats, gram flour, coconut flour, wild rice, maize (corn), cornflour are all fine for him. Again though I'll stress that for people with coeliac disease and allergies to cereals they need to read labels, seek medical advice and be cautious.

Thanks for the heads up on Pizza Express Kirri, there's one near OH's office.

Boots has 3 for 2 on a lot of baby stuff at boots.com including Organix organic finger foods.
