Amazing to find anything organic in Boots let alone something like that in organic ^ ! If anyone wants products like that I think Jason Natural also do an organic yam one.

amaranth, buckwheat, millet, tapioca, rice, quinoa, oats, gram flour, coconut flour, wild rice, maize (corn), cornflour are all fine for him.

Should stop him snacking on easy carb food given it's going to be hardwork finding things if out and about!

From what I saw of the Genius bread, although not great to eat, it made a passable sandwich at first but over the course of the week it got too crumbly to bother with.

I've tried buckwheat in the past and wasn't over keen then.

H&B do organic coconut flour iirc but very expensive.

Actually there are quite a lot of organic products on https://www.boots.com including organic Timotei shampoo !

I wouldn't say that our diet was ever terribly unhealthy - we always cooked from scratch for example - but despite being at low risk for diabetes I developed it. Going low carb in 2010 and organic in 2012 means our diet is now lower in salt and sugar and we eat very little processed food - and I mean stuff like mayo, ketchup, piccalilli rather than ready meals.

Having noticed that low carb me isn't getting the digestive issues he was, seven days eating gluten free seems to have convinced OH that he can switch to gluten free, rid himself of the digestive issues and still have muesli, granola, cereals, bread/toast/rolls and often stay organic too.

Kirri, you're right, he will find it harder out and about to find gluten free (or at least wheat free) but in Sainsbury's the FreeFrom section is 99% cakes
  • Hello everyone,

I am still on a slow conversion journey and I am trying things out. OK I have to admit to being drawn towards chocolate rather a lot :rotfl::rotfl:. Have developed a love of Dutchy milk and I find it keeps for ages.

Reading about these digestive issues with interest as OH suffers and we have wondered about low carb. It isn't something I know much about but I know you can have chick pea flour and people bake with it or semolina instead of wheat so maybe making baked goods may help your OH adjust.

I ordered the organic seed catalogue Kirri and will definately be placing an order. One thing well be parsley because our rabbit loves it and she should have the best :D

Hi dozey crow good to see you around..

Generally, chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa has a lower percentage of sugar so 90% cocoa for example can be found which is around 18g carbs for a 100g bar. Chocolate is high in iron so eating it isn't a terrible sin.. but the less sugar the better.

A gluten free diet isn't necessarily a low carb diet, because these days you can get all kinds of cakes, cookies, muffins and pasta which may be gluten free but are still carbs.

However, an eminent American neurologist, Dr David Perlmutter MD has written a book called Grain Brain, advocating eating low carb to avoid Alzeimer's. He was on the Dr Oz show with Dr Mehmet Oz (a veggie Turkish American cardiologist who used to be really pro-carb) http://www.doctoroz.com/episode/do-carbs-cause-alzheimers

And on BBC News recently another cardiologist in UK Dr Aseem Malhotra was talking about the demonising of saturated fat
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-24625808

Couscous is made from semolina and semolina is made from durum wheat so couscous and semolina both DO contain gluten.

Gram flour is gluten free though, you're right, because it's made from chick peas. It's still a carb though.

I know it's totally confusing, OH and I are still getting our heads round the whole gluten free thing here.

Personally, I'm not sure that subbing one carb for another makes a diet healthier overall. But it does seem like wheat and sugar are replacing saturated fat as the demons to avoid !

I personally wouldn't recommend this. I tried the one for dry hair (brazil nut?) as I was looking for something organic and sulfate free but it's horrible - really, really drying and it left my feeling really odd and sticky. It's a shame as it's easily available and not too dear, but it just didn't work well at all for me. I really wish that a supermarket or somewhere like Boots or Superdrug would carry a decent organic haircare range!

    Thanks for that ^ Callie22

I tried the Daniel Galvin Junior hairjuice watermelon conditioner which is organic - works really well - just can't stand the pungent fake watermelon smell !

  • Hi All,

My goodness Edwardia this wheat/gluten thing seems really complex... I will have to sit down on a quiet day and try to get my head around it!

Many thanks for all all of the links to.

I am thinking of getting organic shampoo and conditioner. I am allergic to sodium laureth sulfate so I have to be careful. I use good quality old fashioned soap to shower with but need something for my hair. I will have a look.

Still doing that myself dozey crow..

Yikes that stuff is in soo many shampoos etc must be really difficult for you.

Just been a real glutton.. roasted cauliflower florets (20 mins Gas 5 til golden with a bit of organic EV olive oil and freshly ground black pepper plus 2-3 slices chopped up prosciutto) and then swamped in unctuous salty sauce.. a 300ml pot of organic double heated on low heat so doesn't boil.. grated Mozzarella stirred in.. low carb wheat free and cooked to perfection by OH
