Organic food in supermarkets

It's Organic September once again so please look out for offers.
Ocado just emailed me and is offering 20% or more off selected organic products.
Last year Sainsbury's had offers on organic food and Tesco was offering extra Clubcard points on some organic food.
However, it often disappears again in October so if you can afford to snap up stuff for the freezer and cupboards and make jam/chutney
Just released that this is the thread's 100th page so well done us
I haven't had an email from Ocado! Oh I feel neglected now lol. I NEED organic discount damm it! lol.
I had my job interview on Thursday and I think it went well but It could go either way I think. Just got to wait for the phone call now.
Wow 100th page. Feels like a birthday! It's great that the thread has lasted this long.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0 -
Glucose is natural, every cell can use it for energy. In nature, fructose is found in fruit with fibre and natural.
HFCS and variants such as glucose fructose syrup are man-made and many hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. It's used in place of sugar because it's so cheap as made from subsidised American corn. Your brain can react to glucose and release insulin to push it into your cells. Your brain doesn't release insulin in response to fructose and only the liver can deal with it. Like trans fats, HFCS is something your body was never designed to cope with.

Hmm, not great... it's either the Suma glucose fructose one or the supermarket ones have sulphites in which I'd rather avoid. Or I learn to make it myself...
If anyone sees any other organic brands of mixed peel for baking please post it up!0 -
The one from Real Foods has glucose syrup Kirri

bornintoit the Ocado offer wasn't just for me this time -just checked Ocado offers page and if you hit organic it lists 519 organic offers
:bdaycake:for 100 pages and I'll stick up another one when we get to 2000 posts. I have to say I never expected it either and it just goes to show that there are thousands of people who read this thread and are interested in good food as well as saving money.
OH got his job so hopefully you will too. I spotted ad online on a Wed, he called agency next day, interviewed on the Monday, got a verbal yes five hrs later and the paperwork two days later. The fact that they expressed interest in you and asked you to interview is a really good sign IMO xx
Anyone with a B&M store near them www.bmstores.co.uk ? If so, two things caught my eye.. Princes wild red salmon 213g tin 1.99 at the moment and World of Spice Himalayan salt spice grinder 390g 1.990 -
If you're out and about near a JD Wetherspoon pub, I just discovered that the tomato and basil soup is organic !

Not what I expected from a Wetherspoons! Looks like they are trying to get a piece of every type of consumer. They have had a vegan meal on the menu too which is quite unusual in a cheap chain pub.
With the real foods peel, I'm just now getting confused with glucose syrup and glucose-fructose syrup! All peel seems to come from Italy I've noticed, wonder if it's mainly from the same factory and different things get chucked in it..0 -
Glucose and fructose are both natural but not together in a syrup.
This mixed peel is Italian and organic

^ Wish those sites had more pictures/labels etc - quite a bit of choice though, thanks for links. I'd like to see pics of the one without sugar. £10 a kilo difference between org and non org! Going to check an indie org shop this week and if no luck will have to order online - was trying to avoid postage costs to save £ and as I've got an o/s Ocado order I don't really need enough stuff yet to warrant ordering from elsewhere
So presume glucose syrup and glucose-fructose syrup are much the same  and I may as well give in and eat it..0 -
Kirri see #1981 they interact eith body differently. Tho given the tiny amount you'd likely put in cakes etc really not going to make a huge difference - on the other hand people who drink a lot of soft drinks, eat a lot of ready meals and splurge the table sauces over every meal might be ingesting quite a bit of HFCS.0

Hi everyone,
Just thought I would pop in and say hello. I have been reading this thread for ages and consider myself to be much more informed about food as a result. Up to now I we haven't been able to afford much organic food and have just been buying odd things when on offer... but I start work next week and so we can afford better food!! :T. It was funny actually because it was the only area that we wanted to increase our budget in!
Anyway I have a leaflet from Able & Cole so I can order a veg box, we have a Waitrose nearby that had a nice range of organic food (including Dutchy milk which is delicious and often reduced to 29 out 19p) so I can investigate there.
We are also keen on avoiding the hidden sugars and have been reading the good professors website so as we are informed. It is all a bit :eek::eek:
I will pop back if I find any bargains0 -
Welcome to the thread Dozey crow ! Congratulations on the new job. There's a lot of satisfaction in being able to buy something worthwhile and think: " Yeah, I earned that !"
I always look at organic food as an investment in my health. It is more expensive and it's not always easy to find but lessening the cost and finding organic food are why this thread exists. I am conscious that this is MSE and many people will say that they can't afford organic food. That's why it now includes additive free and wild food too.
Dozey crow if you have any questions please ask, we're a supportive friendly bunch hereAnd if there are more lurkers thining of posting.. please do !
