Chuckling at the expression meat-eating non-bean eating ;)

Went on a train trip today to the sea and was nice warm day, but muggy. Dover had food stalls in Market Square with things like Italian cheeses, paella, baklava and olive oil. OH chose 3 loaves for £9 one of which was organic rye.
  • Does anyone else shop online (or in real life!) at Real Foods? They have some really good choices for organics and not too high a price level (£24) for free p&p. Really like the Biona rapadura sugar...

No unfortunately they are just rescue hens :(
best option I will get as a veggie who has yet to give them up..

I wasn't trying to make you feel sad or guilty, I was just curious. It is great that those rescue hens will get to live out their full lives though. I struggle greatly with my food choices also because of compassion for animals.

No, it's ok, I feel guilty anyway! I'd rather not have eggs or dairy at all but I struggled being vegan, albeit I think it's more just what I am used to so may well change in the future.. so this is a good (interim?!) option for me. The cheddar is fantastic too flavour wise...

Forgot to say that their customer service is excellent too if they get anything wrong, which sometimes happens. :)

One of the great things about this thread is that we have such a range of diets and experiences of allergies and health conditions that we can help each other. Also, we're a pretty adventurous bunch when it comes to food, always looking for new things to try and new places to buy them from :T Go us ! :D

Riverford Man was flummoxed by OH opening front door this morning. Got rhubarb for OH and he wants to make himself crumble.

I don't keep sugar or flour in the house so please could I have organic recommendations for small bags ? They have to be available in either Sainsbury's, ASDA, Lidl or Tesco as OH is chomping at the bit to have crumble after lunch tomorrow and A&C delivers Monday.

    Thanks xxx

I hadn't seen that site I don't think but weirdly after you posted the link I also saw a competition for them on here! Looks like a good selection of items though so have bookmarked it.

    Never heard of rapadura sugar?

I can't be much help as the ones I like may not be available in those shops ^ but I find the Billingtons organic unrefined natural granulated cane sugar from Waitrose/Ocado is a good buy at £1.09/£1.05 for 500g. Not sure if it's available in the other supermarkets though in organic? I don't always get the exact type of sugar for a recipe due to cost/cupboard space but this suits most baking recipes I do.

For self-raising flour I only ever now use Waitrose Duchy light brown organic 1.5kg £1.99 (makes perfect sponge cakes too in case your OH wants to expand his bakery skills!). As an alternative a Doves Farm one should be fairly easy to get hold of in the other supermarkets ie Sainsburys at least, and I think they are usually only 1kg packets? Pretty sure I've seen organic flour in Asda but never tried it.

Fave recipe for crumble is a Delia one:

    4oz whole almonds
    1 tsp ground ginger
    3oz chilled butter diced
    6oz self raising flour
    2 tsp ground cinnamon
4oz demerara (I use whatever sugar I have though)

^ All goes in a food processor together though add the almonds later as they should be in chunky bits

As that makes quite a lot can either halve the recipe or it freezes well and I just take out whatever I need for a portion (I use a tapas dish for a portion rather than making up a family sized one!). Rhubarb could be frozen in portions too if not all used from fresh.

Not heard of it, but had a quick look now. Looks decent and will be looking closer when I have more time.

Yes, I have GORD so life can be pretty tough food wise.

All these choices will hopefully be useful to us all, even those of us on tight budgets.

    eating meat again!

Miroslav - I had to learn a whole new way of cooking when I changed.. though giving up the meat itself was easy for me.

I hope I find it easy to do when the time comes. Chicken is one of my favourite things (free range) so I will need to find a healthy alternative.

My mother was here today and drank us out of milk in mugs of tea  She also got up at 0700 this morning to make organic Homity pies as a surprise for lunch from the Cranks recipe book. If you can't afford the book/local library doesn't have it to photocopy ;) then Riverford will sell you Homity pies.

Ended up in Morrisons this evening after a walk in the park, which didn't have organic sugar or SR flour. Morrisons organic milk was 2 x 4 pints for £3 on offer though, they also had Green Giant organic tinned sweetcorn 89p and 2 Morrisons organic courgettes for 1.29. Lindt Excellence 100g chocolate bars are on offer, so 1.50 instead of 1.85

If you like Heinz organic cream of tomato soup pls don't buy it in Morries at 1.09 :( altho the most expensive store for this (surprisingly) is ASDA at 1.15 ! Waitrose. Ocado, Sainsbury's and Tesco all sell the organic Heinz cream of tomato for 96p but Sainsbury's has it on offer on until 10/09, 3 for 2.50

OH is duly trekking to Sainsbos in search of sugar, flour and soup muttering about going back to work for a rest. :D

Thanks Kirri for the info xx
