Riverford and Abel & Cole sales are both up I think though ?

For us organic food is a necessity not a luxury. I hit the online sale offers on Bank Holiday weekends, always shop the organic offers at Ocado, buy 90% of my books from charity shops and don't drink now.

Carrots are a new one and I can't understand why they have to get them from Israel. Is there a carrot shortage here ?

Last year the very wet weather and lack of sunshine has had a huge impact on the veg and fruit harvest meaning that veg and fruit are smaller and with more blemishes. It was extremely difficult to harvest in the horrendous muddy conditions and affected quality of produce. This has also meant that supermarkets have looked to abroad to fill the gaps in produce. Its also extremely difficult on organic farmers as they are unable to replace the loss of nutrients in the soil quickly as they can't use fertilisers . :(

Hi peeps, long time no see :o

Managed to find my much sought after organic kale in the Wholefood shop in Kensington, London. It's Russian red kale, delicious and superhealthy. Unfortunately it's a whopping £2.58 for a bunch which yelds two cooked portions, maybe 3. Waitrose haven't had any for a while, and theirs is a more reasonable price for curly kale and a larger bag of it. Green leaf vegetables are NOT a food that I want to buy unless they're organic, as they soak up a lot of pesticides and other chemicals.

Has anyone tried Eversfield Organic? My grandfather came from a farming family based in Devon so I was feeling rather sentimental seeing an organic Devon farm that delivers.

I am more than aware of this and appreciate what you are saying. I live in a part of the country that produces much of the produce supplied to all the major supermarkets. I did however manage to find Spanish organic carrots in Sainsbobs yesterday. The main reasons for not buying from certain countries I'm afraid is political. So much is grown on stolen land and I feel this to be wrong and will not support it by buying the produce.

Would it not be fairer to open another thread so others can express their opinions on the debate for and against conventional farming, organic farming and GM products, and why they might support either, and why they might purchase one or the other? Post the links to the above if you must as well as these articles are after all of interest to most consumers.

Most people who don't buy or can't afford organically grown food most likely won't be viewing this thread. Are they not allowed an opinion also?

It doesn't appear fair if people aren't allowed to defend against accusations and assumptions such as those made in post #1805.

Incidentally, I wouldn't normally view this thread as I'm not persuaded by the ideology behind organic farming, and I'm not normally interested in buying organically grown food stuff either, so normally have no interest in viewing this thread. Though after hearing the latest news on genetically modified crops I thought I'd have a look to see what others might be saying. However, I'm not prepared to comment here for the same reasons I've mentioned above. Either way, I wasn't going to comment until I saw what people on here were posting, you almost appear to be verifying each others opinions without any debate or oppostion. This clearly is unfair!

Lugh_Chronain, as the OP for this thread, I thought I'd reply.

There are thousands of threads on MSE about finding cheap food. This thread was started to share info on organic food. It can be extremely difficult to find at all, let alone cheaply.

This thread wasn't designed to debate the validity of organic food. I assumed that if people wanted to read a thread on organic food they were interested enough to want to know more about it and where they could buy it.

As you write in your post, you came on here to see what people in the organic thread were saying about GM food.

Expecting people who buy organic food to be pro-GM would be like asking jockeys at Royal Ascot if they would be in favour of turning the racecourse into a F1 track. Most, probably wouldn't be.

If you take the time and effort to find, and fork out the extra money for, food which is grown without loads of synthetic pesticides, I can't see why you would want fish genes in your tomatoes.

I'm sure there are threads about the pros and cons of GM and if there aren't you could either start one or resurrect a previous thread.

To say we shouldn't discuss GM on here is like saying that people on a gardening thread can't make comments on a scene in a soap whereby someone buries a body under the patio - and spots that the tomatoes in the growbags were plastic and the shed door was upside down.

So they are topical comments rather than a specific debate about GM.

Extra virgin coconut oil (wonderful for cooking!), I found a 400g jar of Biona Organic in As Nature Intended. £8.00. I haven't found anything cheaper anywhere. A little goes a long way and it's a great addition to any cuisine. :)
