Organic food in supermarkets

Morrisons organic vacuum-packed beetroot IIRC under 90p.. on occasion these can be tough whether Waitrose or Sainsbury's. Instead of four large ones, the pack was filled with several baby ones which I would presume to be more tender.. but no.
I wouldn't say Avoid because I've had duff packs from other supers. My preferential recommendation would be Sainsbury's SO organic however.0 -
Just done my first order with Farmaround for delivery next Tuesday:
1 x Veterans Artisan Bakery Mediterranean boule
1 x Calon Wen butter
1 x Cow Nation whole milk 1 LTR
1 x marmalade
1 x strawberry jam
1 x Ecover toilet cleaner
1 x Ecover cream cleanser
1 x Faith in Nature aloe vera soap
Will let you know how I get on.
Edwardia , are Cow Nation anything to do with Liz Jones of the Daily Mail? I remember reading that she and a friend were supplying milk and eggs from cattle and hens allowed to live out their normal lifespan. They had a very limited delivery area. Or I am confusing this with something else?0 -

Tried the top half cut in half with butter and with out. The bottom toasted with butter and all was very nice. My oh said they were a bit short on fruit but still enjoyed them. He's more of a tea cake fan and generally won't eat hot cross buns and dislikes all of the supermarket variations.
Have looked at the Seed and Bean chocolate and am very tempted
RufydoofyM , agree with your OH that Authentic HCBs could do with a bit more fruit. Just trying one of the HCBs from Hobbs House from today's Riverford delivery. Really liking these, a bit sweeter than Authentic, I think, nice flavour but again would like a bit more fruit. Will definitely buy again, quite melt in the mouth(I have just had a very cold bike ride to the post office and back so think I deserve HCB:rotfl: )

Yes alfsmum you're entirely correct. Cow Nation milk is available only via Selfridges or Farmaround. The herd is based in Ilfracombe and Cow Nation is a partnership between Isobel Davies of eco fashion label Izzy Lane and Liz Jones of The Daily Mail. :T

Got my Riverford order done for Friday (Farmaround next Tuesday).
1 x mushrooms 200g
1 x cherry tomatoes 250g
1 x Flour Power City Bakery pain au levain 400g
1 x High Weald Dairy Halloumi cheese 150g

1 x Riverford clotted cream 250g

I daren't eat HCBs because of my diabetes but lurve the smell. OH doesn't like them and my mother not keen either so I don't even get to sniff any
There's a separate thread I started with offers on Higgidy pies, quiches and slices. If you haven't had these delicious morsels (many of which are vegetarian) go see https://www.higgidy.co.uk Everyone who has had them at our house lurves them and OH is a complete addict0 -
Will be interested to hear how you get on with Farmaround - sure I used them many years ago.
I'm going for Riverford salad box and a few bits and some more bits from A&C this week I think, need to put my orders in. Might try the A&C eggs instead this week, had Riverford eggs 3 times now and pleased with them.
I've done two recipes from A&C cookbook now, both good, the carrot salad and the potato bread things. Got some interesting ideas for using up items.0 -
Kirri - I lurve the Abel & Cole eggs, might try some Riverford ones though and share them with my mother. I took her down half a dozen A&C on Saturday and she loves them. She's contemplating doing occasional orders with A&C and Riverford although she likes going to Sainsbury's.0

I have now finalised my Riverford order and we are trying their meat this time to go with the 2nd large veg box.
Ordered,
Beef brisket joint 1.3kg (to pot roast in the slow cooker when we visit fil)
Beef steak mince 400g
Chipolatas 400g
Smoked back bacon 300g
and
Pimhill muesli 1kg (as it appears to be better value than the supermarkets)
Went to Tosco earlier as I needed fresh yeast and had a voucher to use.
No organic biscuitsno organic peppers or lettuce and no organic cherry toms. in fact they seem to do very little at all. I did how ever find organic kidney beans and chickpeas on offer, 76p or 2 for £1.20 and got some organic ys bananas for £1.19 instead of £1.59.
Then popped to Waitrose to use my £15 voucher. Picked up several bags of frozen organic peas and organic tomato puree. Found more bananas but this time reduced from £1.79 to 45p  so got some more. Looking forward to nana sarnies tomorrow once oh has made the bread
I resisted the urge to get some G&B ice cream which is now on offer, 2 for £5
Unfortunately Riverford don't do bread in our area, but since I have my own personal baker that's ok except he doesn't do sweet stuff.
Just put Laverstoke pork in the oven for later0 -

I cannot stand Liz Jones. I have read many of her articles and she seems very self-centered and seems to be rather bitter with the way she attacks other women whether they are young, old, make up free, live in the country, have children etc. Noone seems safe from her venom.
Sorry I haven't posted much, I have been trying to keep track of this threads posts though.
I have been ordering things for growing potatoes in a bag. We only have a small garden so needed to grow veg that didn't need an awful lot of room. Some of it is because I want to start becoming less dependent on the system so to speak, I know it's only a small step but thats the idea, one step at a time. I also want my son to become more aware of where our food comes from and how it gets to our plates. I have managed to find organic multi-purpose compost at £9 for 50 litres, I'm not sure how good of a price that is for organic compost but it was affordable for me so I bought it.
I'm also trying to find more local sources of organic food and keeping to the seasons so I can stick to buying British as much as possible.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0 -
Bornintoit, New Horizon is a good organic peat-free compost, they also do growbags if you need them.
The Gardening Centre Group (formerly Wyevales) do 60l of multi purpose compost for £4.99 or vegetable compost for £5.99 and the growbags are £2.99 each - not cheap but really good quality. HTH.0
