alfsmum, the bakery used by Riverford in my area is Flour Power City Bakery. https://www.flourpowercity.co.uk and OH is working his way through the bread section
So far his favourite is the ciabatta.
Admit didn't know Hobbs House Bakery so I got curious. Based in the Cotswolds with stockists mostly in the area between Cardiff, Worcester and Reading plus a few in West County and of course Riverford as well as Harrods. There's an online shop too so OH can try them. https://www.hobbshousebakery.co.uk
Any recommendations ?
I would email Riverford and let them know about the problem, see what they say, especially if you've not had probs with the bread before.
Also, I'd check whether there are preservatives in the bread. If I buy bread and know OH won't start on it that day, it goes in the freezer because often there aren't any.
From Ocado, I get Gail's Bread for OH. https://www.gailsbread.co.uk which is also available from their own shops, 40 Waitrose stores in London and Harvey Nichols. OH goes potty for all of it but particularly the olive sourdough.
OH found the Daylesford fruit bread and pain de miel from Ocado too sweet but my everbreadlovin' mother adores it. https://www.daylesfordorganic.com
He likes the Long Crichel Bakery bread from Dorset, at Abel & Cole especially the pain d'Auvergne https://www.longcrichelbakery.co.uk Haven't tried much of The Authentic Bread Company stuff from Abel & Cole yet but he liked their croissants. https://www.authenticbread.co.uk
We live in a town of 50,000 people which doesn't have one bakery which bakes its own bread. The ASDA here seems to, but doesn't do organic AFAIK. Having deliveries from Abel & Cole, Ocado and Riverford really gives him access to fantastic bread he wouldn't otherwise get.0 -
As for the website.. I'm aiming for something go to, useful, fun and a website which doesn't get too bogged down by worthiness.0

Nooooo....guess which idiot deleted the hot cross buns from the order instead of the eggs. Very wet but cheerful A&C man arrived without bunstaking this as a sign to add a Daylesford fruit loaf to tomorrow's Ocado order and luckily I found a couple of pain au raisin in the freezer earlier so they are now defrosting.
Yes, I will email Riverford. Hobbs G stone loaf is lovely (available from Riverford) and we are very fond of their fig and walnut which I can get locally if I order or get to the deli early! Hobbs are quite well known now after the Fabulous Baker Brother TV programmes and the boys did a book signing at the deli last year. Just a village deli, quite new but great customer service. Didn't buy the book, just ogled for a bit :rotfl:
There are no preservatives in the bread. There a shop and cafe in Nailsworth near Stroud but I think their HQ is in Chipping Sodbury near Bristol.0 -
Riverford man was looking a bit soggy too
A&C eggs are very good actually, my numero uno followed by Daylesford. Clicking on the wrong thing is all too easy online, I've ended up with too much of things when I thought I'd removed a few packs of butter. OH then opens freezer and whinges. I did nibble a bit of that Daylesford fruit bread and it's sensational.
Not being a bread eater myself, I wouldn't watch all those baking shows. I might suggest it to OH though as he's wanting to make sourdough himself this summer.
Do you live near enough to get to the Whole Foods Market store in Gloucestershire alfsmum ?
Kirri if you're lurking, thanks for the organic veggie gravy powder recommendation (Marigold)0 -
LadyDee, hello there :wave:IIRC Whole Foods Market in the USA got er stiffed over organic produce from China. I don't like Chinese garlic, but it's everywhere. I did find Argentinian in M&S and French at French Click but neither was organic.
Anyone else seen organic garlic ?
I bought organic garlic from Riverford. 3 pieces cost me 1.55£ a bit pricey. But it is so good as my mum's home grown garlic:j“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”

Hi,
Second delivery arrived today from Riverfordno veg this week just more ham and leek tarts and homity pies and a pork pie to try. The homity pies were so nice I got some extra for the freezer, oh thought they were the best but I liked the ham and leek just as much. Probably wouldn't have tried without your recommendation Edwardia. Also without this thread I doubt we would be using A&C and Riverford so thanks again.
Interesting about the garlic, China :mad:
Just checked ours from W'rose and its Spanish.
Have Ocado coming tomorrow, another organic pork joint (£7.99 kg on offer), organic carrotts £1 kg and g|& b minis on offer for gifts (last lot ordered were consumed during a Quality Test). Have also added some doves biscuits to the order.
One of my favourite veggies is broccoli but it doesn't generally keep well, But I read somewhere that by placing the stork in a glass of water in the fridge it will last longer and it does :j:j:j I got a load on offer 3 weeks ago and tried this, every 4/5 days I cut 2mm off the stork and refreshed the water as needed. Intending to have the last one left for tea with some sea bass I picked up last night at Sainsbobs. Went in late and didn't expect to find a bargain but 2 whole fish for £2.28 instead of over £90 -
Found organic Duchy diced steak in Waitrose, Westfield Stratford, today£4.89 for a 400g pack. I bought two for my slowcooker, so will be making a lovely stew and freeze it in portions.
I'm particularly pleased as in recent weeks I've been able to find only Duchy mince or whole steaks.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
