Travelling by plane when they bring out the bags of peanuts is a nightmare.

I think the airlines are getting better over this. I have to make a long trip soon and Singapore Air have offered to ensure the entire flight is nut free - if I provide a note from my doctor confirming that I have a life-threatening nut allergy. Very impressed!

My grandaughter now 11 has severe nut allergy. When travelling by plane her parents have always asked for nuts not to be served and all airlines have agreed.
They belong to the Anaphylatic Society and their newsletter keeps them up to date with changes in food ingredients. It's worth joining.

Nut allergy can have serious consequences sometimes fatal.
It's a sad world when it's not taken seriously and at risk of a child's life.
  • i've heard that as many as 2% of children have nut allergy but have never met one. my son is in year 6 and school hasn't had an allergic child yet. off topic but i wonder if it clusters in certain areas, or if it's genetic?

super41 i have a similar reaction to cigarette smoke and so do my nephews. if that was allowed inside the school building then i'd be trying to get it banned so i completely understand parents who want a nut ban. kids only have one meal a day in school, they can last without nuts.

Not all of those 1-2% are going to have a serious peanut allergy - when I was a kid I could get away with eating nutty sweets and I would get a 'bad taste' in my mouth, swelling of the lips, and I would go 'ugh, don't like that, won't eat that again' and after a bit the reaction would fade away. The same thing now would lead to a visit to A&E :)

I've noticed that the reaction seems to get stronger with each exposure to peanuts, and have heard similar things from other people. I've also read that up to 20% of children with nut allergy may outgrow it. These two things seem to be in conflict and I can't explain it.

As for the genetics of it - some families are more prone to atopic conditions like asthma, eczema, hayfever and other allergies. I don't think this necessarily relates to the severity of the reaction though: none of the rest of my family have such a severe reaction to anything, for example.

I'm glad they didn't accuse you of being selfish by wanting to deprive other passengers of peanuts.
