Making towels soft

I use white vinegar (distilled malt vinegar, I think it's called) instead of conditioner, and always tumbledry my towels. I don't find I need essential oils - it doesn't smell at all by the time it's dry.0

Lots of comfort & tumble dry0

I stopped using softener with all my clothes, too many stories about tumble dryers going on fire!
I wash them with plain fairy non bio, then tumble dry them with my tumble dryer balls.
They don't have that silky feel like they do with fabric softener, but they are soft and more absorbent without softener.
Before I had the TD, I washed them with softener, a touch plain clear vinegar and line dryed them, after a good shake.0 -

But they do!!! Softener reduces absorbency. Never wash tea towels in softener, they don't dry your dishes, good excuse to leave them to drip dry though! I'm not lazy, my tea towels don't work
I also admit to liking a scratchy towel to dry my back, a little bit exfoliation!!! :rotfl:0 -
White vinegar, nothing fancy. The clothes don't smell at all. Linen tea towels are great done this way, soft without horrible fake fabric conditioner.0

I don't like fabric softener in towels as I don't feel they dry you very well at all. I haven't tried vinegar mind you, so that may be different. I do always tumble dry towels (and bedding), but nothing else. They come out nice and soft, although not particularly fluffy. I am not sure if it makes a difference that we have soft water up here??0

I always have fluffy towels and I use these balls, which bash the wash. I have to dry everything indoors on airers and get equally good soft results with ariel 30 and ecover
