There was a telly programme on last night: The Queen of Versailles - worth watching on a catchup. It started as some Reality TV filming of a bloke/his wife/family as they were building the largest private residence in the world, based on the Palace of Versailles.

At one point he was talking about his success, as if it was something he did. The filming then filmed them through the downturn of 2008 and them laying off 6000 employees and getting rid of about 19 of their domestic staff.... and at the end he had a totally different take on success and fake success etc. He'd seen the other side - the side where everything you thought was your choice and in your control was taken away and leaving you with nothing.

You have to have been lucky, then unlucky, to realise that you'd done nothing different, you just got up one day and were unlucky..... some people are lucky again.

That house is in Orlando. I posted it on the Look at This thread a while back after it was put up for sale. AIUI he's still a very rich man, just not as rich as he was. IIRC he owns Westgate Lakes, which has several timeshare and apartment complexes.

I was thinking about this just now over the washing-up - that is pretty much what I decided on.

It is nice when you feel like luck is on your side though. I love it when e.g. you get to a traffic light and it seems like it has changed just for you :)

Or that amazi g thing late at night when they all do...it's like being magic. :o

I meant IRL. IRL I'd never meet any of you ..... our circles wouldn't meet.

Did anyone else just pinch themselves? :D

Although I had the opposite thing a few days ago when I couldn't get a set of automatic doors to open - then someone else walked up and they opened straight away. We exchanged a giggle as they had noticed me trying and failing :)

Spirit my camera is working again so I am trying to work out how to take a picture of dh's cap from his 'doge' outfit. (we also call it wee willy winky garb).

I have tried aiming the camera at the top of my head and it doesn't work.

Edit: Obviously not me in the pic

I made the outfit. The hat can be worn in different ways but wNted the button in the pic. As its not afull length shot you cannot see the wonder of a man in a floor length 'doge suit'. Keeps him warm though!

Thanks for listening to my tales of woe (and not so woe) - as usual :)

Hope that the 'Inrates excursion is fabulous and suitably hot and steamy :D

    Night all x

One of the loveliest things about the arts in italy is that while there is price exclusivity, people across socio economic scales value the arts.

Dh's firm had to stop taking rid interns though.

Not everybody's good at those, participate in those, or mix in circles where this is possible. I am not even sure what "in art" means.... do you hang out in random art galleries chatting to strangers?

If you're "not like them" then people won't want to mix with you - and you might not be able to do anything about not being like them.

I work somewhere where talking is almost a sackable offence - although I am lucky that there's somebody "just like me" there (single/older). Everybody else is "a bit of a young bloke, with laddish activities, or a young family" - I'm not like them I'd never be included in anything they did in their lives. I am never in an environment where I can build friendships - I never meet people "like me", most people are family-centric and/or in a relationship; people don't have time for new friendships with people not like them. I don't do networking - I can't/don't do smalltalk and am "not like them" as people who network are usually of a different personality type (NTs). I don't do sport (expensive/not interested). I don't do art (no interest).

    You are friends with us.
Some NP you know in RL.
You make friendships in 'the new way', using a social media where you are very successful. Far more so than I am from what I can see.
    You make time for NP
You do creative things - make jewellry. Build forums and web things.
I can do small talk, however am not keen on it.
I have a small number of close friends.
Apart form NP I do not think I have made a real new freind for about 10 years.
I do not do sport, although am taking swimming lessons as I can swim but have no style or stamina and I want to be fitter.
I cook because I like to, but its not special, more homely.I can sew a bit, but cba to make anything that is well finished.
Holidays used to include some kind of culture, until I discovered spa's and slobbing around on a lilo.
Musee D'Orsay, Pre raphealite and Anthony Gormley are all a holiday for my head but I cannot get anything allegorical.

My view is that there has never been a time when high functioning skills/aptitudes such as yours were more suited to working and socialising. It overcomes some (i accept not all) barriers that existed before Berners Lee gave us the interweb.
