@Vivatifosi - Ok so I had a look. IIRC your family is in the Gympie area. Channel Nine are talking about a fall of perhaps 200mm on Brisbane so my guess is that 500mm is a worst case rather than a prediction.
Also, the ground won't be sodden up there at the moment as it was a couple of years back. The water will go through areas rather than causing sustained flooding which should mean that the emergency services won't be as stretched as last time.
This is a link to the BoM radar for Gympie:
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR081.loop.shtml#skip
actually is a composite of several radar stations so it shows 512km around Gympie. As you can see, at present there isn't much in the way of rain there to speak of as the cyclone is still further north.
Let me know if you want me to delete the post.
For the Nice Peeps that are interested, here is how those in the north of QLD deal with flooding:

I am getting a tax refund ...of two pounds 37 pence.
Seriously? Dh is being charged an extra amount of about two grand. He has already paid more to hmrc for the business. Not sure this is right at all.0 -

I'm pretty busy this time of year doing clients' tax returns but always explain why the tax is due. Mind you, most of them just say "Where do I sign?" and don't even want to go through stuff...0 -
Ask your accountant.

Every year I take a Friday afternoon off to talk to my tax accountant about my return. Every year I wake up on a Saturday morning having spoken to my tax accountant the previous afternoon and there is a small pile of accountancy on my pillow and a head which is free of accounting.
Accountancy simply wont stay inside my brain.:(0 -
OH always insists I do my own tax return. Problem is over the years it has got more difficult, more sections, more income streams. Some piddly stuff in money terms, but still need including. For an accountant it may be simple; even though I can do maths, I find it difficult. He refuses to let me wimp out of it.
Last night I completed it. So it tells me I have a massive bill, it forgets to tell me that I have already paid a big chunk of that "on account".

I do two tax returns, one for DW as she earns all the interest and we need to claim back any tax she has paid (can be a couple of k). This one is done in April or May, as soon as we can get the interest statements from the banks.
The other I did 2 days ago for a young man who doesn't bother to work much but did about 8 weeks paid last year in the building trade which means on a self employed basis under the CIS. Even though his total earnings were below tax and under CIS 20% is deducted at source so a refund of several hundred quid was due he couldn't be bothered to get the figures together and had lost most of the paperwork and even the threat of a £100 fine even though he was owed a refund barely seemed to be any incentive.I think....0 -

They just said 'you owe it'.
Third year here, second accountant. On the move again next year I think. I need someone that comes here really I think, that doesn't leave things out (we had this stuff ready to go and we thought dealt with in autumn, they mucked up and we had to resubmit).0 -
Amazing the amount of paperwork you can get through when you are guarding your house. Really need a webcam in each room!

With your recent experience a weaker person than what I believe you to be, could very well get paranoid.
Watching a webcam would be like doing the jobs of these people that watch the screens of CCTV city centre control rooms.
I hope that you have found the right person this time and try not to leave any temptations around your house and I am sure that you will not go down that road;)
PS Haggis night tonight folks all those trying for the first time enjoy.0 -

Well....I think it depends. We have quite an extensive CCTV system in plan. Mainly of course because of the business and its associated valuables, but also because of a planned business use for them. That sounds confusing and a little dirty. The security aspect is a belated housewarming gift.
We cannot have trad alarms because of the critters, and rurality and fairness to others so the house is also planned to be covered by some not often used in domestic settings security devices.
I don't plan to watch my house like TV, but it would be nice to get pics that could be used for identification and hopefully prosecution.0
