Nice people thread part 7 - a thread in its prime

There was a car, a nice audi sports car, parked outside the house. Not in my way, but I thought it odd that it wasn't in a residents bay let alone displaying a visitors badge. (we have bays and parking restriction one hour a day to prevent commuters clogging the streets). Plus everyone has room on their driveway for extra cars. So I thought it may have been stolen and someone may be missing it. Nowhere online to report it, so I phoned 101 (non-emergency police number). Got put through to the Met police, who told me I'd come through to the wrong police force (like its my fault!) Anyway they took the details. Its gone today, so I guess someone suddenly noticed their car was missing.
I was reading an article about someone who went through 2011 doing a good turn a day - then published a book on it, so it paid off. So that is my good turn for yesterday. :rotfl: If it is like our council, if the lid is open more than an inch it will be rejected. Whereas I understand the reluctance to take normal waste that overflows the bin, recycling should be encouraged.
This Christmas tree overflows the bin by a couple of feet all round, with dense, spiky foliage. So, you'd need to be a pretty determined bin man to get close enough to it to get hold of the handle. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Maybe he will grease the refuse collectors palm on approach.
Might be worth videoing the event so you can let us know

If the bin man has grease on his palm, he might lose his grip on the wheelie bin. As it's at the top of a hill, it would be worth videoing, but nobody would believe it wasn't staged. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
PasturesNew wrote: »Re Chewy/job: most people will DENY that there is any such thing as a public sector job "already spoken for" - and say it'd not be allowed. I don't apply for public sector jobs because:
- I am sure the job's already spoken for
- The forms are huge/long and take too many hours to fill in
- You know that if you've no public sector experience previously then you're unlikely to tick enough of the boxes because a lot of the requirements could only have been gained in that sector
- You need a job NOW and most public sector jobs aren't even interviewing for at least a month, so probably 2-3 months before the job starts.
Overall, if you "need a job NOW", it's quicker/better to apply for private sector jobs because the hoops you have to jump through are less, the person/job criteria won't exclude you so readily, the job will start sooner.
not sure about elsewhere, but we only advertise externally if there is a real job and it hasn't been filled internally. we have to advertise internally for 7 days before we can put an external advert out, but we don't have to advertise externally if we don't want to - so if an external advert goes out it means that there is a job going.
pretty sure it was the same in the civil service but i can't really remember now.
the point about timing is absolutely on the money. it takes so bloody long to hire anyone it's embarrassing. once you've got through the rigid process and got a job offer it doesn't get any quicker. public sector HR is awful. it seems to consist of hordes of people who have no HR experience or qualifications and no interest in doing anything. it can take three months from the time you extend an offer to someone for HR to actually formalise it - often they've gone and got another job by then.0 -
My whole 'career' is based on the fact that it is cheaper, quicker than and easier for the civil service to employ ment me as a contractor than appoint a permanent member of staff.
Still in Herts, as long as stuff is on the bin rather than next to it they take it even if the lid won't even stand up let alone close as we proved again on Saturday.I think....0 -
