How on Earth do you cook for 22?!

Christmas as ever is just the three of us; mum, sister and I. I do sometimes wish we had more family, love the idea of having lots of people round, but then I think maybe it would be a lot more stressful...

    Happy birthday GDB!

Most people over cater at Christmas any way so are cooking for more than they need to. Roasts are pretty simple at there most basic, the only thing is to plan so that everything fits in the oven or that things that don,t only needs the scooping time of the meat resting or can be reheated during that time.

The other key thing is to plan an easy starter that doesn't use plates you need for a later course.

I have pared right down, but usually we serve at least three puddings for exame, but all but the Christmas pud can be cooked or prepped the day before.

Not sure I can remember when BBC1 was just called the BBC, but I can remember when you needed a special button to increase the number of lines on the screen so you could watch BBC2. And it was illegal to show repeats more than once.
Remember the moon landings on TV and watching skylab going overhead. :)

I think you'll find you needed a different Tele to watch BBC2 when it came out. Old TV's worked on 425 lines and the new ones on 625 lines. We couldn't afford a new TV, so it was years before we got BBC2

Well, no Marron glac! to be had round here for love nor money. Waitrose sold out. 'weeks ago'. I bought the last bottle of the filtered skimmed milk too. They had sold out of all crazy stuff not Christmas related at all too. :(

People were buying bars of chocolate buy the box load....what's wrong with people?

Apart from the goose hopefully thats it for me and going out for days and days now. :). Apart from in laws visit.

    Happy birthday dearest gdb.

One woman next to us at Waitrose this morning had 2 massive trolleyfulls. Her tally >£300 when we left and she still had half a trolley left.

I'm now cleaning the oven :(

This might be a bad christmas if I crack the oven door today. :rotfl:

I don't mind any of Christmas shortages but for the Marron glac!. They are probably my second favorite sweet in the whole world ( first being stuffed prune d'agen...mmmmmmmmm. And I was going to make some nigella concoction with them.

Fingers crossed for my oven please. I've got some crud stuck on the inner door but I've turned the pyrolytic cycle on, with advice from mr. kool. :/

I could get you Marron glace from our Waitrose but it won't get there till after christmas if you desperately want some? :) we definitely have loads of marron.

Yep. It needed two dials one for VHF BBC1 and ITV and one for UHF for BBC2 and a line number button to increase the number of lines. Or one button that switched the line number and frequency band. BIt like FM and AM radio.

They still had twin dials on TV when DW lived in the US, but they only had one number of lines (525 or something). Always remember that US telly looked rubbish on British TV unless it was shot on film because of the decoding that had to be done to adpat thier colour system and resolution to fit our screens.

When did they stop making blackand white tellies?

Oh, that's not fair. It had sold out where I got parent to go in London yesterday too.

Thank you dear thing, but hopefully we will get stock in after Christmas at least? I MIT make the nigella thing sans Marrons . Not sure.

ATM we are making misskool jelly, woefully late ofcourse, but it's one of the nicest things ever, thank you for the recipe. :)

    My milk preference too.

If you need more try cravendale filtered milk, usually available at petrol stations.

Gsh really? I so rarely go IN petrol stations any more. But we have one about three and a half miles away. I shouldn't run out, (it's only me and parent who drink it really) but if we do we can just drink normal milk. Of which we have um, a lot, if we can catch one of the cows or if we relaise we need it before the milk collection has come to next door. :D

Michaels, I missed your ham post earlier. I am with generali, I like a sweet, sticky, spiced glaze (this changes accordion to fancy) but not a sweet sauce., though a sweet chutney or relish is a different matter. I am not a parsely sauce person either. I prefer chutneys and even membrillo. Mango chutney and ham is a match made in heaven.

Nigella lawson does a nice sweetcorn pudding with ham which is the famous coca cola boil method. I prefer corn fritters myself, dusted with paprika. And Personally I prefer a baked ham. Baked hams are part of the festivity in my family, the animals used to be given the bread dough (as did I actually) that the ham had been baked within and that was the start of Christmas, the game ready to eat on return from church (we ate after my mother and i had been to midnight mass as a big festive meal and opened gifts, because christmas dayhas been more social.)
