And don't forget that packages get X-rayed and potentially will be opened if not declared properly. Mine are always just lobbed in and hope for the best.

Just in case anyone is looking for extra Christmas presents for themselves, I've just bought: http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=304223

I know 'The Undercover Economist' has come up a few times on previous NPT, and this seems like an interesting bundle :) There is also a free delivery code on the relevant board.

I remember seeing this fella for the first time (on Jools Holland - this is the actual clip) & just being jaw droppingly amazed at how he did all the sounds & sheer goddam funkiness of it all!

Have seen him live 2 or 3 times since, & he's awesome live too.

    Nikkster, have a gander/youtube at:
    Son of Dave
    Lemon Jelly (of course...)
Spiritualized (if you like radiohead etc, you'll love these)

I'd also heartily recommend Underworld, Beck (especially Odelay album), Garbage (1st 2 albums), James (the whole laid album is awesome, whiplash, hey ma, wah wah, the night before all brilliant), Leftfield (amazing), Massive attack (blue lines or mezzanine albums), Sigur Ros...

One of the best gigs I went to recently was Mika.

For those who like blends of different types of music, I can heartily recommend Girl Talks 3 recent albums (night ripper, feed the animals & all day). It sounds like your record collection in a blender!

I like the Son of Dave clip :) Will have to find out more. Thanks!

Lemonjelly - I didn't like Nice Weather for Ducks and that put me off tbh. I prefer Mr Scruff (quite similar I think) - and when I've seen him, they serve tea as well as the usual alcohol :)

I've seen Spiritualized live (and have Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space... I think on cassette:eek:) I prefer Radiohead though.

Underworld, Garbage and Beck I like a lot. James I like quite a few of their songs, but really dislike Sit Down.

Massive Attack I really like - have seen them too (brilliant). Leftfield I like, but not quite as much.

Have Takk... by Sigur Ros, but haven't explored them much further.

Bet Mika puts on a great show.
I just don't think I can do a top ten. I just cannot.

Fwiw this sort of thing is as close as it gets to an argument in the rates household..........

I think I have mentioned over the years some of the things I can not imagine not having heard, absorbed and made part of me..
No one ever shouts about Air. I have a few Air CDs, and all I need is a beautiful, beautiful song. I don't know I would be me if I hadn't heard it. I feel the same way about Deleriums 'silence'. I have particularly fond association with Paul Simons gracelands. My dad had it in the car one summer and it was surprising to me. Likewise, he had a tape of oh bu99er, name escapes me.....any way, some hit sings Fred Astaire. It was amazing to me, as my father hated the old musicals my mother loved, and it was clear to me from this tape that there was no communication over something they could have found middle ground in. I later used to sing night and day as an audition piece because it's ranges and not many kids sang it. It also always brought me near years, so was handy if I had to speak some sad lines in same audition.:D

As and when I think of others I might be able to throw them in,but top ten type lists are hard for me. My brain doesn't work that way.

Oh, I always associate carpenters (mentioned by single sue I think) with the best summer I had with my sibling. Before I relaised that there was mental illness and other families didn't have this, and likewise Carole king. And Tracey chapman. I don't feel Karen carpenter ( in fact, some of it makes me cross) but it is a fond memory of love and closeness that wasn't easy in our family (me included) and Tracy chapman and Carole king stayed with me. I think of Carole king when I think of the song 'natural woman' not aretha. Because I heard Carole's version first.

My parents were anti pop( considered not good for my education so I heard little eighties music unless sneaking into my sisters room when she intermittantly lived with us. I saw the video for sledgehammer in her room, and it scared me silly. I still have that frisson of 'what the hell?' when I hear it, only it's humorous now.

I love Gracelands and Tango in the Night (Fleetwood Mac) (and the soundtrack to the Jungle Book) because my mum always played them in the car.

I really like Air. I think I have about 6 of their albums. I've also seen them live too, and it was really lovely. I seem to remember it was all seated, which was a bit strange at first, but quite nice.

I also remember seeing the Sledgehammer video on Top of the Pops. I can see why you would find it scary!

American Express are still offering money back when you spend £x in various places. One of which is Liberty. Visited for the very first time on Saturday (what a beautiful shop, I can't believe I've never been in for a wander round before).
Went to buy a gift card to take advantage of the Amex offer and as well as the standard gift card they also do gift coins:
    http://www.liberty.co.uk/fcp/categorylist/dept/gifts_coins-and-vouchers
Which added to the Harry Potter feel of the place. The wrapping took just short of forever (like the scene in Love Actually http://www.workingtitlefilms.com/features/video/id/221/gift-wrap-clip), but it is really quite special.

As someone working towards personalised medicine, i'd just like to point out that everyone is different, that why people react differently.

Yes, I know everyone feels like banging on drug companies now (must be the in thing after bankers) but believe me, everyone has their own agenda!

I mainly agree with all of that.

I'm not so keen on James as I only know Sit Down and I haven't gave them a chance.

LJ says they are really different and good, I expect they are.
