She did and was told that an elderly couple gave up the dog as they now had limited mobility or some such rubbish. Basically the rescue centre lied or omitted the truth.

Something similar happened to a dog a relative adopted. It went psycho so badly that it had to be put down. They'd seen this developing but still housed it with a family. My parents have had dogs their whole lives though and are very instinctive, they were wary of said dog from the outset.

I should also say to lir that the greyhound idea is a good one, Mum had a lot of retired racing greyhounds before I was born and likes them a lot. I'm afraid to say that I'm named after her favourite. I'm glad she had girl dogs, going through life being called Butch would have been a nightmare:D.

Shocked by this comedy pair from Oz and the prank call.:(

It's tough enough doing some jobs without being humiliated for a cheap giggle. You couldn't treat a criminal like that without "infringing their human rights". Horrible.

I don't think there are any aspects of the main story that this stems from that could make me feel anymore sad.

This lady was just doing her job - which was nursing, not working in PR management etc - and apparently answered the phone in the absence of anyone being present to cover reception. There should have been appropriate briefing and procedures in place as soon as it was known that a Very Important Patient would be in residence, and also appropriate cover in place for all necessary posts (in which I include answering the telephone). Once the unplanned event had occurred, it should have been dealt with swiftly - not leaving those concerned to wonder what their fate was - and people should have been looking out for those who were caught up in it.
As much as it was distasteful, I don't even particularly feel the DJs who ran the 'prank' (seems shallow to call it that now) are the most to blame here.

So, just in case anyone was concerned about my levels of hygiene (seeing as I live on things that are 'out of date' and am relatively liberal when it comes to toothbrush sharing)....
An electrician came to where I am living today (as they did last week). The flat owner (I am subletting from their relative) came round to deal with that. No problems so far. Relative has the 'main' bedroom, which is ensuite. I have the small bedroom and the main bathroom. Last week and this week I come home to find the toilet seat up (and today the loo roll had been changed - I might have purposely left and empty roll on there to discourage use). I have a real problem (I previously understated the strength of my feelings about this) with the toilet being flushed with the lid up. I feel a bit aggrieved that someone helped themselves to starting a new loo roll. But I am also dislike people wearing shoes indoors (unless it is in the county and impractical/ animals etc) - more so in the bathroom where I will be shoe and sockless. I have been (relatively) liberal with my first pay cheque - I think this is reminding me I need to save up to be Lord (/Lady) of my own Manor.

What the comedy pair did was mildly amusing. That poor nurse killing herself is terrible. It's very sad, and we should have a thought for her husband and children. I am suspicious that the hospital management, instead of supporting her, may have started disciplinary proceedings, and that led to her suicide.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

What would be expected is that there was an internal investigation into this incident - breaches of patient confidentiality/professional codes of conduct blah blah blah. The outcome would not automatically be disciplinary action. Hideous to be in it though.

This poor woman's professionalism called in to question, struck fear for the future in her and she could see no way out what a crying bloody shame.

I think I am a bit sick of cheap intrusive 'jokes' by those who have the airwaves at the expense of the innocent. The Russell Brand/Jonathon Ross 'plot' having been another.

It is an abuse of power. Unintended consequence on their part but culpable. Just like drunk drivers who unintentionally hurt others. I feel very angry, as for those who agreed to execute this gag I hope their careers are over.

The same radio station tricked a woman who had been raped into recounting it live on air.

    LOLZZZZZZZ.

A mongrel is as healthy as the sum of its parts. With most thankfuLly make it healthier, but not always. A problem with irresponsible breeding most common behind mongrels is that the individual parents are not health tested for their breed weaknesses.

Fwiw, I have long argued for partbred registers within kennel club, much like we do with horses, which IMO would benefit breeds. As in deed would permitted outcrosses.

    The other issue is this...

Breeds originated for reasons. Most people have dogs they like the look of, but a truely wise dog buyer buys on temperament and energy levels and job designed for. Nine out of ten times a mongrel and it's owner make good companions. A wise and rare choice (and it can be the sum of parts in a mongrel appropriately chosen) the companionship is as good as a fairytale marriage. IMO ones who go the most common route love their dog as much, but don't know what that magic element missing is, I.e. don't recognise anything could be better.

    Cases
I've silvercar's friend are I hope pretty rare!

My parent's got a collie/lab cross when I was young, she was the runt of the litter, absolutely tiny and everyone had passed her over for the bigger, stronger ones.

19 years she lived for, outliving all her brothers and sisters. She was an amazing dog, we got her when my sister was a baby and she even learnt to bark quietly so as not to wake the baby.

Their next dog was another collie/lab cross with something else in (we never did find out). She was just 24 hours away from being put down as her owners were emigrating in a couple of days time and the local resue places didn't have room. Patsy (the 19 year old) had died just a month or so before and us kids just couldn't face the idea of a healthy dog being put down, so off we all trotted up the street to the neighbour who was emigrating...and promptly fell in love.

After that, with 3 adult children and a son in law in tow, my parent's didn't stand a chance....Lady came to live with mum and dad the same night.

She was 6 when they got her....and 20 when she died.

They also inherited a miniature poodle called Pepi when my nan died (shortly after they got Lady), little begger he was but they loved him all the same. He also lived a long life, especially for his breed, we think it is because all the animals live a good life with my parents with the right mix of exercise and diet (even their blooming budgie lived 3 times the expected time!)

They don't have any animals now and although they would love to have another dog, they realise that it really isn't feasable as dad can no longer walk them.

And us kids? We all have cats! My brother has 3, my sister has 2 and I have one but we all yearn for the time when the children have flown the nest/got older and we can get a dog.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
