I remember at least a couple of stages, where LA looked around at Ullrich who was on his wheel, and then just rode away from him as if he was standing still.

    Armstrong was/is an amazing sportsman.

Maybe he wasn't a force of nature, but a force of science, but he nevertheless was never beaten and never accepted that he could be, even when a rival got away from him on a steep climb he always found a way to claw him back, and that WILL never to lose was part of his character and soul, not due to chemical help.

According to the USADA documents, the initial motivation for Armstrong to use dope was when he was getting his bottom kicked when riding for Motorola. He was sick of getting beaten by dopers and so became a doper nonpareil.

I think Armstrong is one of the all time great riders. I also think that the way he has treated some of his fellow riders is shameful. The removal of dope from cycling has been and continues to be very painful but at least they are addressing the issue. I can think of a couple of male tennis players who are clearly taking steroids. Soccer players are barely tested and I don't believe that the increased athleticism is just down to having a plate of pasta on a Friday afternoon.

Where there's money there's corruption. Soccer and tennis are, I would imagine, 2 of the 3 great cash generating sports in the world. I'm not sure what would help in golf: beta blockers maybe? Are golfers even tested? IIRC they aren't.

Well that's about 0.002% of the TdF sorted. If you have a chat with Mr Brailsford, or Mr Ferrari, they can work out how to cope with the other 99.998%

i'm thinking i'll have a chat with this ferrari fellow, i don't think mr brailsford has the attitude that i am looking for.

Got it. Start Monday. I didn't 'negotiate' over salary, took what was offered as I've nothing and it must be better than £0 :) £9/hour though... with lots of 'promises' like they make - so we'll see if they come through. In the meantime I get to have "a proper job" on my CV that would make me more marketable if they turn out to be not forthcoming with the promises.

surely baseball must eclipse tennis and golf? there are dozens of players on contracts with a value in the hundreds of millions of $. (although obviously if you're the best at tennis or golf then you make a killing, but the money doesn't go far down the chain).

also just cos tiger woods gets $100 million from nike doesn't mean golf is a great revenue generator - just he is an iconic sportsman, if he happened to be as dominant in another major sport, the money would follow him there; i don't think nike would be chucking $100 million at phil mickleson if woods wasn't about.

i don't really know and am just guessing of course!

That's why I drink black coffee.... all I need is hot water and coffee... and, if at somebody else's, that's all they need too. No more suffering somebody's long-life milk or too much milk or peculiar sugar. Full of wins.

Pfft.... I've now got to pay for the underclasses to drink Stella from cans! I can't afford to buy you toffs drinks too :)

Although, actually, I doubt I'll be paying tax until the new tax year as that'll be my main employment so my tax free allowance will go on that ... and I'll be paying tax on my interwebby home earnings instead, which won't be a lot.

When somebody said "Armstrong... Savile" after the question of "how can you cover something that big up for so long?" ...... I geniunely thought it was a reference to the moon landings :)

    Really.

Maybe it's just simply time for two lots of athletes/contests: [1] Drugged up to the t1ts and [2] Straight. So you can see what man can do with drugs.... and what man can do alone. Although they'd have to sign HUGE disclaimers against anybody saying at a later date that the drugs made their legs fall off/whatever.
