    Building inspector day, site meeting day.....

    Just proving how soft I am getting I am dreading peeling myself away from the woodburner. I am so close I can feel my mascara going tacky. :)

    What do NP think of Jimmy Saville revelations?

    I can't help thinking that:

    (a) its slightly unfair that this comes to light when he is not around to defend himself

    (b) if his activities were so prolific why didn't someone, somewhere say something earlier

    (c) if celebrities/ BBC knew why didn't they shun him at the time

    (d) some of these girls who are now coming forward may just be wanting their 15 mins of fame/ sell their story/ get some compensation.

    (e) if these revelations are proved it obviously taints his reputation, but does it totally negate all the charitable work he did?

    i find it quite odd the way it has come out, and that everyone is very quick to just announce that the allegations made are "facts" rather than allegations (which goes to (e) - you cannot really "prove" any of this as you cannot try a dead man in court, but as G has pointed out a dead man also cannot sue you for libel so the media can just talk in "facts" rather than "allegations" if they choose).

    that said, the evidence coming out from independent sources does seem to mostly stack up not only to suggest that JS was at it, but that there was a culture within the broadcast media at the time which extended not only to "fans" but to female presenters too. i am not too sure what the value of digging up the past is. presumably we'll just get some heartfelt and pointless institutional apology from a current BBC executive who wasn't born at the relevant time.

    in terms of the charity work - it doesn't negate the fact that people who needed help received help, so it doesn't negate the impact that the charity work had, but the fact that he did a lot of charity work in no way redeems his character if he did what is alleged. put it this way - if he was alive and the allegations were proved in court (i.e. that his behaviour was systematic and not a one-off), when it came to sentencing i don't think the judge would be halving his sentence because he also did some nice things.

    Well, there and back. Did "quite well", so they like me and now it's just a question of whether they like another person they see more. Will know by the weekend.

    Hours = 40.
    Hols = 20+8.

    So not drawing me in with great terms..... but any port in a storm and all that.

    I've had to pay for one of those disclosure thingies for a new work assignment.

    Yep, 25 quid for a piece of paper with little on it apart from the word NONE scattered here and there.

    Bargain :D

    Well done. Fingers crossed for you, PN.

    The hols look fine - what else would you expect?
    Teaschers get sweet FA benefit from short hours and terms. It's a peculiarly full-on job and if it could be stretched out over a longer time might be more bearable. There are people who reckon the time off makes it a doss but not many are people who have actually done it.

    My take on Jimmy Saville. It's like finding santa's been at it. I'm sad and more than a bit suspicious.

    I went out on a corker hunt after architect left....very very few of them :(

    I was going to make a poncey autumn garland that would have had on whooping with laughter at middle class housewives, but no chance now.

    Rather too late, I fear. Round here, they were on the ground 6 weeks ago.

    Well, in an ideal world, hours would be 35 tops ... hols would be 25+8.... or more.

    I know somebody in the public sector who gets: 25 + 8. Plus: 2 extra 'bank holidays' and flexi-time that they can build up to 2 days/month. Plus long-service of 25 years which adds another 10-15 days' annual leave on..... something like that'd be sweet :)

    So what is good?

    Hours=37
    Hols=25+8.

    would be decent, 40 hours is not terrible if people stick to it. If the culture is to work 45 plus in any case, then what is written on paper is irrelevant. OH works 8.45 to 6.30/7 most days, so averages 10 hour days and may take a lunch break or may not.
