It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

i agree with this by and large - because if you're not a higher rate tax payer then if you do want to invest you might as well put it in a stocks and shares ISA and retain the ability to spend it when you want to rather than wait until the govt tells you that you can spend it.

if your employer is paying in though it's a no-brainer as it's free money, as long as you don't have to pay such a ludicrous contribution yourself that you can't afford to eat.

It all gets more complicated with tax credits and kids though as effective marginal rates even at minimum wage can be more than 70 percent. hence I could.give up 20k net for a 53k pension contribution next year.
    I think....

Thinking about it, there was the one at the end of the M1 that went up not that long ago too. Though we're going to have our mega incinerator in Hatfield soon, with the chimney that will be seen from miles around. Once that's open I don't know if it will have a voracious appetite and these places won't exist anymore.

For anyone not from round these parts, I'm talking about this one:

Maybe they could send their rubbish up north to be dealt with, seems par for the course for the NIMBYS in London ;)

Back home from wet Wales. and skimmed so random comments on some past posting:
But is that cable malarky? Cable's only in a few areas (big cities), so not available where I am.

Yes its cable, but cable have two offerings these days, one for cable enabled streets and one for other roads.

We do have a landline but its BT, so not connected to the broadband. Some historic deal that was offered when we moved house that is in need of review.

I enjoy the bit when I teach about DDT. In the series MASH they're all planning to go home to an America that has patios, pools and barbecues and backyards that are more than the junkyards that fill New England, because they spray these areas with insecticides

In the Maldives they spray whole islands with insecticide twice a week and get no insects!

I used a tethered iPhone as a dongle for a laptop for a few months and it worked a treat. The internal wireless modem had stopped working in the laptop so I even used it to connect to WiFi.

I have a feeling that iPhones in the UK can't be tethered unless you jailbreak them. Don't know though as I am neither an expert nor in the UK.

Some iphones can, in fact the iphone software is geared up to running as a wifi hotspot for an ipad, though some networks don't do it. I know O2 allow it but Tesco mobile don't - even though Tesco mobile uses the O2 network.

    Got some thinking to do.
    Food for thought.

Anybody else here not using a landline?

Still got a land line but £9.50 O2 unlimited BB and £6.28 from Primus for landline (only use it for 0800), not too onerous.

    .

I lived somewhere where the island was sprayed every evening. There were still PLENTY of insects. Plenty. Plenty.

I remember adults simply covering their glasses with there hands and I used to ignore calls to go in and try and stay underwater in the swimming pool the whole time the plane was overhead. When I think how much spray I must have been contaminated with its amazing really, that there is not more wrong with me:rotfl:

The whole landline and mobile thing annoys me. If you live anywhere rural it is BT or nothing and mobile service is poor too.

I pay £36 per month for vodaphone Iphone which I cannot recieve calls (and rarely texts) on at home.

At home we can only have BT, lousy Broadband service and in total £82 per month. Although our package includes all landline calls most of the calls these days are to mobiles.

As my DD also has a contract (with o2) I feel we pay through the nose for very poor service.

You can get BT line rental for £129 PA paying upfront (=10.75pm) including free evening and weekend calls (7pm-7am)

Seems you get the second bottom package for the bottom package price in the link below.

Plusnet do a BB package for £6.49pm if you aren't a heavy user.

They may be able to offer you a better deal for both land line and BB if you talk to them.

I like Plusnet as they answer pretty quickly and you can understand them and they always seem to be able to deal with problems rather than just fob you off.

Cut that £82 to £17.24 + a couple of quid for calls, as easy as that :)

I expect you need to change mobile suppliers when your contract is up.

Try and find which network gives the best reception in your area. When people visit ask them if they have a signal and what network they are on.

You can usually pretty easily get a contract £5-£10 pm that will give you 500 mins 500 texts and some data.

Michael is the man if you want cheaper than that and are prepared to jump through a few hoops ;)
