I’m the reverse; if it doesn’t have a tune that would sound great if you hummed it, I’d barely recognise it as music. I liked some early hiphop and rap but now I can’t bear it.
I totally agree. I have relatives who have suffered hearing loss and would regard it almost a greater loss than blindness.
There's a lot of talk that the biggest issue in hearing loss is the breakdown in communication with other people but at least there's writing and lip-reading and signing. I think the communication issue’s reductionist and missing the biggest point of all, the real elephant in the room
Never hearing the voice of a loved one, the sound of birds, the babbling of a brook and the sheer beauty of music in its endless variety. Irreplaceable.
I remember seeing a documentary where a dad preparing for his profoundly deaf daughter's cochlear implant operation and having a version of a beautiful tune played to him electronically as it would sound to her. He put on a brave face but you could see him mourning her loss.
It’s a very precious but fragile sense and we’re all only one bad drug reaction away from experiencing it.
Middle son is partially deaf from damage caused during his delivery but strangely it is music which calms him down. It wasn't realised just how deaf he was until they changed the way they did the hearing tests, he was passing them with no problems at all....they then realised that he was lipreading when they were talking quietly, at the age of 3! Once they covered up their mouth's, he failed every single time.
From then on, he had to have the adult tests with the bleep into the headphones instead of putting the little men into the boat with the audiologist using quiet and loud voices.
Mind you, the problem now is he doesn't realise when he is playing louder than he should, it's not a problem for him as to him, he is playing quietly! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Now that is a good idea, something I could set so that DD knew that having the piano up to that level was ok and any louder was not - could also use it for running around shouting - roll on summer when they can use up their energy out in the garden again.I think....0 -
From afar it's starting to look like the whole BBC thing is descending into farce. That Schofield idiot giving the PM a bit of paper with some names of nonces he got off Google was ridiculous.
This is the ultimate accessory for deaf people:

I hope it's not offensive, I don't think it is. I'll take it down if anyone doesn't like it.0 -
Spirit I hope your brother's therapy goes smoothly and well for himlostinrates wrote: »I was losing my sight earlier this summer and I was bloody petrified. I would miss hearing tremendously.....
I cannot say which I would miss more.
I could communicate with dh with out one or other, I cannot choose which would be least hard.
My grandfather was a "jelly-man" down the mines and his hearing was poor and completely gone in one ear. After comlaining of chronic head pains he had to have an eye out and was given a pension. The doctors afterwards said he needed the other eye removed but he'd get a much bigger pension.
He gave the right answer to that and stuck to the modest pension he already had.:beer:There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I suspect, but don't know, that the ll's away for the weekend. Just 2 miles away, I think. I knew there was some event to be attended this weekend, but as she stayed out all night and all today I am guessing that she's staying at the hotel where the weekend-long event is held. It's purely social, so would make sense.... but if I'd been told I'd have watched the telly last night and today. So ... now I am confident this is the case I will de-camp, with lappie, to the living room... and watch the telly. Then, later, I'll go get a takeaway
X Factor night FTW.
Edit: ... and here I am0 -
Does anyone know how to make a complaint about a political circular?
I had some political blurb posted through my door a couple of days back but didn't read until today. Essentially it was sent out at the same time as the whole "is there a Tory !!!!!phile ring" was circulating.
So alongside the Labour flyer on why I should vote for them in the election, I have a copy of an open letter referring to a tory councillor who has been identified as having !!!!!phile images on his computer. The title of the letter is "Can the Public Trust the Tories" and the clear subtext is that it could happen again (won't reproduce in full here) if we vote tory/can we trust tories to be in charge of police. The guy has been sentenced and was guilty of something pretty repugnant, but it is the association I find quite vile.
This is really, really, low and Labour has just managed to lose my vote for about - let's say - forever (well that's how I feel at the moment anyway). Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? That does it for me too viva. I doubt if I'll ever vote for them now
Strictly FTW btw :beer:0 -
Really enjoyed Strictly tonight! I liked the Tess/Claudia combo, thought they went well together. Thought Tess's arms needed to be shortened at the cuffs on her dress, but other than that it was fab. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Feel like Strictly is turning into a bit of a panto though. Craig's scoring used to be reliable and now it's just a big mess!
Heston's fantastical food on c4 is pretty good.0
