Surely all of this is ‘theft by deception’ or 'fraud' - knowingly scanning something that comes up under priced and knowing it is really more expensive than it displays. I’m not really up on consumer law, but sounds like you could end up at least, banned, or in court... :-(

sorry if this seems a bit insensitive, but are you nuts?

it is not the customers fault if the store prices things wrongly. And let's face it - they do it so many times the other way around; charging more for things that list cheaper on the shelf. And they hope the majority of people don't notice.

I agree entirely with ‘their loss your gain’ however, ‘knowingly’ doing so is surely committing fraud ? I know the area of pricing is a minefield. If you see a car marked £1000 and really its £10,000 because the last zero feel off doesn't mean they have to sell it for £1000... My main point is knowing the price is really higher – from the postings here for example...

They don't have to sell it no but there is nothing stopping you from trying to pay £1000 for it - it is up to them if they sell it.

The till is just an automated car salesman if you will - if the car salesman sells you the car for £1000 then more fool him. It is not fraud just an error. If it is flagged up at the point of sale then they are within their rights to refuse to sell it to you but there is nothing fraudulent about it. The fact that sometimes it is not flagged is a shortcoming in the way they choose to sell to you that is all.

I do understand the whole concept and the short comings in their systems. I guess it’s just up to the till person to flag it – if they even notice !

Maybe I’m just too honest. But publicly promoting the flaws in a system opens the forum to being accused of committing and promoting fraud by its owners and users.

forgive me if I am wrong here but, to my understanding, the items scanning at 1p are obsolete stock that, at the managers discretion, can be taken off the shop floor and destroyed.

Surely by destroying these items it suggests they have no monetary value to the company and therefore people are paying more than they are worth by paying 1p. After all, as far as I am concerned, getting 1p for something is better than getting nothing.

Tesco have stated many times on their facebook page that they have "encouraged" all stores to allow the sale of 1p items when customers appear at the checkouts with them. They have also issued a memo to that effect, and screenshots of said memo have been posted on several sites.
No one is doing anything wrong by purchasing these items.
  • Have just got back from tesco and they either didnt have some of the stuff on list and the stuff they did have which is on the ist did not go through for 1p :(
