1p and 2p supermarket bargains

I found three items for 1pm in the local Tesco's store, Roneo Corner, Romford/Hornchurch Essex at the weekend. I had 2 packets of 20 sheets 6 x 4 tesco finest photo paper and 1 x baby safety net for cot (to stop the animals climibing in cot with baby) all three items scanned at 1p each. I wanted to curl up and die with embarrassement when the cashier called out manager needed urgently. Middle of saturday afternoon, shop was packed and the queue was gettting more stressed as this cashier told everyone that she apologised but the customer (me) who cannot leave the store with the items until spoken to manager. After a 15 minute wait, manager came and announced to entire queue that I was not allowed to buy the three items as they were not permitted to sell them, When asked why, he said cos I am the manager and I am taking them away. Off he marched with the items in his hand. I felt like some criminal, hung my head with embarrassement and paid for my £197.00 worth of spopping and left. TESCO'S CAN STUFF THEIR £1.00 deals. Complaint has been sent. :mad:0

I would have left the shopping and left them to put it back on the shelves. I've done it myself out of principle before in Asda for something similar0

I was so embarrassed, just wanted to die - everyone was huffing and puffing, all for the sake of 3p0

As an employee, if they have a lot of discontinued stock and want to get rid of it quickly, they will get permission to reduce the price to 1p so that they can scan it all as waste so not to go over their weekly waste budgets. Therefore it shouldn't be on the shelf. Usually (depending on each stores managers), they will end up in canteen for staff to give donations for products that will go towards the staff social fund.0

Which of the three sizes of Splenda Sweet minis is the one that scans at 1P?0

I would suggest you phone customer services on 0800 505555 and complain in a calm concise way, the store will be reprimanded and you can then take your business elsewhere.0

I had the same situation yesterday but i stood my ground and got to buy my items. This is their reply.
I'm deeply sorry to hear you were made to feel embarrassed, I can only imagine how upsetting this must have been for you and I do deeply apologise.
There are rare occasions when discontinued products go beyond the "reduced to clear" period, and the value will be reduced to a penny on our tills. We look to remove these items from sale although if you find yourself at the checkout with one of these products we’d allow the sale to take place although we are not legally obliged to sale the item and it can be removed from sale by our colleagues.
Deeply sorry for the great inconvenience caused.
Thanks,
Katie-Leigh - Customer Care
Then ...after i asked why dont u make staff and managers aware of this
The decision to sell would be down to the store management and staff. We are very sorry for any upset caused by this.
Kind regards,
Lee - Customer Care

I agree - it's absolute rubbish!
If they 'look to remove these items from sale', why go to the bother of putting a SEL on the racks?0 -
Surely with the level of computerisation in stores they have the capacity to locate every 1p item and remove it from the shelves if they are not supposed to be sold?Blessed are the vegetarians.0

This is completely untrue of hard goods, sweets etc are often shared but not electrical items......I have several relatives that work there and in those stores they are disposed of by management if they get a chance, otherwise staff have family and friends that can find carefully placed items.
I even asked in the electrical dept about some reduced cameras and they laughed and said they had first pickings and there were none left0
