Er, listen to it-any crackling or hiss? Or dial 17070, select option 2, Quiet Line test. If present, report it as a line fault to your line rental provider-not as a broadband fault.

No it doesn't crackle or hiss. Hence why I asked as thought it was something else. :rotfl:

I dialed 17070 but there was no option 2.

Interesting read. I'm moving to my first place with my girlfriend next month and TalkTalk were actually the guys we were looking at joining. £30pm budget for line rental and unlimited broadband.

You don't get any options on a full LLU'd line (like a TT connection is). The equivalent is to pick up the handset and dial 0 - it cuts the dial tone and will wait until you get the bee-boo sound indicating the handset being off the hook. For that intervening time you should be able to listen for any line noise. :)

Also is there a way to turn off the annoying "URL not found so here's a TalkTalk branded spam page full of spammy links" or do I have to change the DNS server IP's?

If a URL is incorrect I'd prefer my browser to just tell me, not have to be redirected to a page of spam.
  • You'd have to change the primary and secondary dns servers from the router I reckon. If you choose to do that I'd suggest grc dns benchmark utility - it tells you which dns servers will display adverts and which don't, as well as which are the fastest.

Your broadband speed definitely appears to be capped because you should be getting much much faster than 4.5MB on ADSL2+ with an attenuation of only 27dB - typical TalkTalk spreading it as thinly as possible! As I said it's cheap for a reason.

Change the DNS servers in the router e.g. Open DNS:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
to remove the "TalkTalk branded spam page full of spammy links"
