Our ASDA pumps warn of an immediate £60 pre-authirisation at their Pay-at-pump locations, with the sticker explaining that fillimg up with less results in a possible 24hrs timeframe where the £60 shadow charge will take to drop off.0

The blue NatWest debit card is online only, the purple is offline (and can be used at pay@pump). Pay at pump, which I've only ever used at Tesco, per-authorises a small amount (£1 at Tesco) then debits the actual spend, as others have said.
The difference with the online cards is that they authorise the full amount at point of sale, pay at pump cannot do that as it doesn't know the full amount until dispensed. With an offline card, if you have no money but the ore auth goes through, then it will debit anyway and you'll get an unauthorised overdraft created. The online cards are given if your credit score falls below that deemed acceptable for the bank to take the risk with offline. With the offline card, they deem you low enough risk that you will pay back the unauthorised overdraft, should it occur.
Similarly, the online cards won't work on planes, trains, or anywhere else the full amount cannot be reserved immediately (including in the case of a failure of the card network or your own bank's systems).
Additionally, this has no bearing on whether or not you may or may not have an overdraft on that account - the bank may be willing to lend up to the overdraft limit as arranged, but not willing to take the additional risk offline authorisation provides.
For info, all credit cards are offline, hence why they all work in P@P.0 -
He means the £60 is taken away from your available funds with the bank, so say you have £70 in the bank and you buy £20 petrol - you'll only have £10 left available after you've used the pump because the pump will have pre-authorised up to £60 off your card.
Within 24 hours they will cancel this pre-authorisation and then debit £20, leaving you with £50 available.
I can imagine this catches people out but it's done for one reason - to make sure you can pay for the maximum amount of fuel the pump will dispense in one transaction.0 -
Thank you, that makes perfect sense.
Might I suggest Mr Buzby that you purchase this tome.

So someone spends there spare time answering your question for free and the only thanks they get from you is an insult?
As it happens, the post made perfect sense to me, as it seemed to do to others, as they understood it as well.0 -
No Mr Grommit, if you would care to read my post again you will see that I indeed did thank Mr Agricolae. It was Mr. Buzby with whom I may have been a tad snippy.
Mr Buzby will not, I am sure, be too upset, he tells me that he has broad shoulders. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -
I tried to get fuel from Tesco pay @ the pump this morning and had the card declined with the message - "..this card type is not accepted"
Can anyone please shed light on where the "problem" lies?
Is it with the bank (NatWest)? In which case are other bank cards of Visa Debit nature affected?
Is it with Tesco? Will the card type work at other stations (eg; Asda)?
Thanks from one very embarrased & annoyed forum member!0 -

Its to do with risk so with natwest they dish out the blue debit card (online) this is for people who are generally high risk current account holders then you have the purple debit card(offline) which is for low risk current account holders.0 -
