How about a little touch of luxury, something that she wouldn't buy for herself? Presents that one of my elderly relatives used to love was getting really decent handcream! She also used to love crystallised ginger.

Why don't you club together as a family and tell her you will pay all her fuel bills for a year? It might not sound like much of a present but I spend a lot of my working life talking to elderly people who live in their own homes and are absolutely terrified that they won't be able to pay their gas and electricity bills and not be able to have the heating on when they need it. Obviously I don't know your mothers or your familys financial circumstances so you may not want to do this but it is just a suggestion and if she is struggling or worrying about paying the bills especially because we are coming up to winter and prices may rise it may give her peace of mind if nothing else and for elderly people there is sometimes no greater gift than that.

Thanks but thanks to my late father's scrupulous management of their finances over the years she has no money issues.

Does she have a photo of all the Family together. My Grandmother had lots of pictures of us , but not one of all her offspring together.

Getting the 23 of us together was a job in its self, but it was worth it.

  • When my Grandma was 90 we had a meal for family and friends at a local restaurant. This thread brought back a very happy memory - seeing the huge grin on her face when she arrived in style in a Rolls Royce with the top down (was Summer though!). A cousin occasionally drove for a wedding car company and arranged it as a surprise. I definitely favour the treat type experiences.

My Grandma also loved flowers and one Christmas my parents arranged flowers for her monthly for 6 months which she appreciated so much that they kept it going for a good while.

Hope you all have a lovely day
Don't put it down, put it away - thanks Valli

Does she enjoy a tipple at all? My old nan used to love that Sanatogen tonic wine, reckoning it must be good for her if it said tonic on the bottle!!

My Gran was 90 last year (we also have trouble with presents, very large family!!!), I took loads of photos from the party and put them into an album for her.

Does she have any old photos? I took my Grans suitcase of photos a couple of years ago and put them into a couple of albums so it was easier for her to look through.

when my nan turned 90 earlier this year, we gave her a digital photoframe that you can email pictures to without her having to do anything on a computer/memory stick etc and it updates them automatically (would need wifi though, not sure if thats available?)

we are living all over the place, many of us 1000s of miles away from grandma, so dont get to see her very often. this way, we can send her pics of what we've been up to and its a nice surprise for her whenever a new picture turns up on the display.

with a large family like your mum's it should work very well and she would hopefully feel like everyone is keeping in touch.

    it's one of these http://shop.kodak.co.uk/store/ekconseu/en_GB/pd/PULSE_Digital_Frame__W730__7_in./productID.170191100

What a fantastic idea tanjatucker. I had no idea such a thing existed but have just ordered one for my own elderly mum who lives in a different country to me, and misses her grandchildren lots. Provided she can set it up, now she can get pictures of them easily.
