What about a mobile hairdresser to go and do her hair (unless she already has a regular one).

What about a little fruit basket delivery every week?

We do not want to "while away the Winter nights." Would you want to while away the winter nights Amanda? No we don't either.

Actually I would! I hate winter evenings and love having something to keep me occupied :D

My parents have done these books (for me and my brother and their grandchildren) and said they loved thinking back about their childhood/ teen years / early married life and we have loved reading about it and it has sparked lots of lovely family discussions and memories and we have learnt lots of information that we wouldn't necessarily otherwise have known. They are very concious that there is a lot of information about earlier generations of their family they know very little about (Dad has spent a lot of time researching his side) - very different to books about other peoples memories of a particular period that had no relevance to their experiences!

Each to their own I guess - sorry if I've touched a nerve ;).
  • what about making her a Lady?

I got my hubby a Laird title along with 1 square foot of land on the Kincavel estate and he was delighted with it!

Would she like one of these

A lovely way for her to share her memories with you all and something for her to do to while away the winter nights

I wish I had seen this before my Gran got alzheimers.

Quality time with her children, no other relatives.

  • She sounds just like my Grandma who turned 90 last year. : ) We also took her out for a meal with all the extended family, and even though she said she didn't want a fuss, she really enjoyed the day.

My cousins got her a voucher for a posh afternoon tea somewhere, and they all went together. Do you think she'd like something along those lines?

My parents have done this Claire and it's been great and sparked lots of discussion :D. It's lovely for me and and my brother, and our children, to get a real taste of our parents /grandparents lives. Sorry to hear about your Gran - make sure you leave something behind for your future generations xx

Nice idea but she doesn't own a PC, plus she's quite arthritic so it might be a bit fiddly for her

I don't have arthritis but I do have problems with my hands, especially with poor grip and I would suggest that a kindle might be a very good idea.

they can be lighter than the book itself (depending on what she likes to read)
they don't need to have the pages held open
they don't need to connect to a PC as long as they can pick up a wireless signal or you get a 3G one
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

  • A photo of the children/grandchildren/greats done on her special day, then a frame and someone to hang it up for her.

OK--so you'll only be taking the photo on the day, but wrap up the frame and give her something to look forward to after--getting to look at all the photos of the day and choose the one she likes best.

When my Grandmother was 90 me and my sisters clubbed together and got a harpist to come to the home. It was lovely having a little concert and the lady was very good.

A "This is your life" type book. Maybe look out friends/family who can recall their memories with her and write them down? Add pictures
