I did a family tree for a friend who was 90 earlier in the year, his great grandparents throught to his great grandchildren with him in the centre, nicely framed he loved it as did all the family especially the younger ones who could seee their lineage.

Might not go down well with everyone on this thread but some people like to stake their place in history.

  • There are some wonderful ideas here, keep them coming! I'm investigating the idea of having a photographer come along and do a family portrait atm but if I get some declines to the invite that might not be feasible.

  • Why don't you club together as a family and tell her you will pay all her fuel bills for a year? It might not sound like much of a present but I spend a lot of my working life talking to elderly people who live in their own homes and are absolutely terrified that they won't be able to pay their gas and electricity bills and not be able to have the heating on when they need it. Obviously I don't know your mothers or your familys financial circumstances so you may not want to do this but it is just a suggestion and if she is struggling or worrying about paying the bills especially because we are coming up to winter and prices may rise it may give her peace of mind if nothing else and for elderly people there is sometimes no greater gift than that.

Actually I would! I hate winter evenings and love having something to keep me occupied :D

My parents have done these books (for me and my brother and their grandchildren) and said they loved thinking back about their childhood/ teen years / early married life and we have loved reading about it and it has sparked lots of lovely family discussions and memories and we have learnt lots of information that we wouldn't necessarily otherwise have known. They are very concious that there is a lot of information about earlier generations of their family they know very little about (Dad has spent a lot of time researching his side) - very different to books about other peoples memories of a particular period that had no relevance to their experiences!

Each to their own I guess - sorry if I've touched a nerve ;).
Sorry back, the children gained a lot, but it's not a birthday gift for the parent.
  • I bought a large cushion for a 90yr old friend. She was in a wheelchair and used to complain about her back being sore
  • How about a photo book? You can fill it with pictures of all the family, you could even get each family to do a group photo and email it to you specially for the book, or you could do a whole book just of yourself and your own immediate family. Loads of places do them, I use photo box.

For my parents would disagree - they have loved sharing their stories with us all as much as we have loved hearing them

What about a magician or something that the youngsters will associate with great-grandmother's 90th? The older ladies I know really love to see the youngsters enjoying themselves.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • my gran is 97. She loves nice perfume (she wears the same one as a 28 year old friend at the moment!), those socks you wear instead of slippers in the house, and nice clip on earrings... she's always liked clothes and things though, which makes it quite easy to buy for her - she still enjoys a bit of glamour!
