  • Should my bubble wrap be the stuff with the big bubbles or the small ones? Which is best (I have found both)?

Ohhhhh not sure Rosie I'd say either would do and if you've got both I'd probably go with small (traps more air maybe?).

    Well, busy day today:
    • House - windows are looking great now they've been painted & hopefully should last around 5 years before they need doing again:)
    • House - sewed the heading tape onto the fleece linings for patio doors (not perfect by a long shot:o) and have hung them - although wide enough to cover the glass, they're not wide enough to go the full width of the curtains so I've had to put them in the middle IYKWIM, but hoping they'll help as at least all that glass is now covered!
    • Outside - cut front & back lawn & really hope it's the last time they need done as I've dismantled the lawn mower and put it away for the winter:rotfl:
    • Outside - cut back a load of plants etc so garden now looking ok!
    • Garage - started to tidy garage so the car can go in (it accumulates stuff during the summer:o) - car only just fits (it's teeeennnnyyyyy) & really wanted to get a garden shed this year to make things a bit easier but funds haven't allowed :(. I've loads of garden stuff in there & I'm not sure where it's going to go
Had a lovely walk in the woods down to and along the beach with the dog :D - was absolutely lovely (but windy!).

Having an  at the thought of ice soon - only just had new (to me) car 3 weeks and it's an automatic ...... have now got the hang of "normal" driving but still dreading not having gears to slow down with when it's bad out :eek:

    To do

    • Car - must dig out the car winter kit tomorrow (removed from old car when it was traded in & not yet put in new one)
    • House - start getting the odd extra tin of this & that with the weekly shop to build up some stocks.
    • Pets Cats - have 30L (will last 8 weeks:)) of cat litter put away, buying new litter as I start the last bag IYKWIM (so always have one set spare) and they have enough of one of their dry food until Jan but do need to get a bag of their other dry (before Dec!). Dog is also OK, loads of her wet food and will be getting a spare bag of her dry this week.
    • Me get winter coats out tomorrow and put summer ones away

  • can any one tell me please. if you'd brought a brand NEW car in sept would you expect it to have anti freeze already put in it?
Yes, if it's a brand new car it should be enough to last 4 years :) My husband works in the car industry so I just asked him..
  • Yes, they use it as an inhibiter to rust and corrosion on the engine in the summer, you don't change the water twice a year now, it's just left in. So there should be anti freeze already. You could always check with the supplier just for peace of mind!

    Evening all

Not done as much as I'd hoped this week, but overall we've:
    • Had all external paintwork redecorated (last done 7 or 8 years ago)
    • New winter pjs and wellies for littlies
    • New single sized quilt for DD, new bedding for both littlies
    • Joiner in the middle of making new garage doors (they're knack***d and this will cost MUCH less than buying new ready-made)
    • Got some salt for door step, rock salt at DH's work in readiness

    Still to do:

New tyres for car (almost down to minimum, so a must!)
    Draught excluders
Car box (keep buying chocolate etc for it, but it keeps disappearing! :rotfl:)
Sort garage, clean all gardening tools, clean out FF in garage
Add to long life food stores
Pyjamas, winter coat and wellies for me, winter coat for DH (we've not any of these for at least 5 years)

Lots to keep me out of trouble! :D Also need to make sure mum is ok and has some stocks in, esp loo roll and cat food! May keep some stuff here for her as she's so forgetful - small box of emergency rations for her and cat.

Hope those of you in line for wintry weather do ok next week - looks like it will just be a little cooler here.

    A xo

  • Thanks Pink for the shiny new thread:T
Thanks for jogging my memory! .... must keep an eye out as my workplace usually offers them (but limited places) - similar to you, have one of those pesky medical conditions that makes the immune system not function properly and also a singleton which makes being ill (esp walking the dog!) a nightmare.

So true, there have been a spate of fires nearbly this week (unfortunately with some fatalities) which has made me even more paranoid about having any naked flame in the house.

Sadly one of my neighbours died in a house fire last year and, after that, I'm afraid all the candles have been put away (even more paranoid with 3 pets in the house) - luckily I managed to get several of the camping lanterns from £land & several pop up LED lights that are supposed to be for your patio but give out fantastic light at £stretcher (also £1) and now rely on batteries.:o

Just after we moved to old house, over the school Christmas holidays, we heard the fire engines rushing to a house - turned out it was too late for a boy at DS1's school :( - family had disabled the smoke alarm as it kept going off when cooking, and had electric fires in the bedrooms that were too close to the bed clothes. Awful when it happens to anyone, but it feels worse when it's someone you know.

I do have candles in the house, but they're used only under supervision - it's torches for emergency lighting.

    Hi everyone

Hopefully the flu season won't be nasty this year but my GP told me that once you start having the flu jab its a good idea to carry on cos your body will be used to it (not sure whether that means you stand a better chance of catching it once you stop though)

Boots costs £12.99 and usually have plenty of appointments ( I work on the theory of it costing a couple of hours at minimum pay against losing a couple of weeks work if you do catch it and of course flu can be nasty and knock you sideways for months)

On this gloomy note I better get ready for work
    Have a good day everyone
    Cuddles:)

Crumbs, that's not fair - the asthma nurse told me to have DS1 have the flu jab, so he has but now they won't do it at the practice as his asthma is better so he doesn't warrant a jab!
Bossy - Hi, am I right in thinking you got the Boots from Cotton Traders last year - if so I was wondering what the sizes are like - do I need to order up a size to get them on with thick socks??? If it wasn't you just ignore me :]]], thanks

    Helen

I got the boots they had on offer earlier this year http://www.cottontraders.co.uk/womens-boots/faux-fur-lined-boots/invt/aq10502/ and got a 5 though my feet are 4 1/2 wide (G) - I do need to wear thick socks with them.
  • A new thread! I might manage to keep up with this one!!

this year we replaced our boiler, so I've been testing the timer and functions this week! Well thats what i told the OH. :rotfl: Just noticed one radiator isnt working, havent got the foggiest why.

I've got some washing up indoors so my dehumidifier is on for the first time this winter. Need to test it anyway as it plays up sometimes and has been sent back to DeLongi a couple of times.

We've changed to the thick duvet. We always sleep with the window slightly open - what ever the weather so need to be toasty in bed!

I've bought two new pairs of slippers from next with birthday vouchers. One pair flip flop style for bathroom to bedroom & vice versa and a cosy warm pair for the rest of the house. Hate putting slightly damp slippers back on after my shower or bath! I also got some slipper socks.

The homemade snake draught excluder is back by the door!

    Jobs to do:
Get my winter clothes out and washed!
    Check tourches and batterries
    Winter car kits
Get some long over the knee socks
    Get out hats, gloves, scarves
Fleeces for the sofa. OH not impressed with this - he says we're not 90!
Winter tyres on once its under 7 degree c.

  • Have discovered that my boiler has two options, you can control it from it's own settings for the CH which can be set really low or, you can put that dial to max and it let's the room/external(from the boiler, not outside!) Thermostat have control.

I appreciate this but having given it a try, I've found the thermostat only makes it work from well above 16 degrees C, sometimes 20. Then the heating is quite full on and maybe a bit much... However, on boiler control, it comes on really gentle and at a much lower temp so, unless anyone knows of a problem with it, think I'll stick to the boiler control on the lowest setting which appears to be much lower than the thermostat option.... Hopefully save a few ££££s :)
